New Delhi: In a move to promote environmental responsibility and honour mothers, Minister of State for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Kirti Vardhan Singh, led a plantation drive at the University of Valle in Cali, Colombia on October 29. The drive was part of the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam (#Plant4Mother)’ campaign, a global initiative launched by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on World Environment Day this year, a PIB press release stated.

The event, held on the sidelines of the 16th Meeting of the Conference of Parties (COP 16) to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (UNCBD), saw the participation of prominent figures including His Excellency Mr. Vanlalhuma, Ambassador of India to Colombia; Ms. Mónica García Solarte, Vice Rector of the University of Valle; and Mr. Guillermo Murillo Vargas, Rector of the University of Valle. Faculty members and students joined the Minister in planting saplings.

During the drive, Singh encouraged the university community to adopt sustainable practices in their daily lives and highlighted the importance of youth participation in environmental conservation. A sapling was planted in the university’s grounds in honor of the mother of Shri Tanmay Kumar, Special Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change. The Rector, Vice Rector, and Director of International Cooperation of the University of Valle also planted saplings in honor of their mothers.

The ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign encourages individuals worldwide to plant trees in honor of their mothers, symbolizing a commitment to environmental protection. The campaign aligns with India’s national goal of sustainable development and its efforts to increase forest cover.
