Mumbai, Oct 9 (PTI) With the Election Commission of India facing criticism over the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls, former Election Commissioner Ashok Lavasa on Friday said that if illegalities have been committed, somebody has to take the responsibility.

Speaking at an event here, Lavasa also said that the Union government scored a self-goal by changing the law and removing the Chief Justice of India from the panel for the selection of Election Commissioners in a way that was open to allegations of bias. It is also unfair to the people who are appointed, he said.

Things became a little more serious after the media reports on disagreements within the Election Commission, Lavasa said.

“Because now the allegations are about certain illegalities that have been committed. I think that’s a serious thing. I certainly can’t say (about the illegalities). But if illegalities have been committed then somebody has to own the responsibility,” he said.

The Election Commission was not empowered to change Form 6 (used for new voter registration) and the poll body was not competent to change the rules, Lavasa further said. PTI PR KRK

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
