New Delhi: A teacher of a primary school in Delhi’s Model Basti area allegedly hit a Class V girl student with scissors Friday and then threw her down from the first floor of the building.
The girl suffered head injuries, and was admitted in the Bara Hindu Rao Hospital. Her condition is stable, doctors said.
The teacher, who reportedly harmed another student by striking him on the head with a stick, was taken into custody for questioning.
Deputy Commissioner (Central) Shweta Chauhan said the local beat officer received information around 11.15 am that a student had been thrown down the school’s first floor.
The police examined the classroom and allegedly found study books, notebooks, pencils and lunch boxes scattered around, along with the furniture.
ThePrint has learnt that the teacher, Geeta Deshwal, was shouting “Long Live Geeta Deshwal” and abusing the police when they went to round her up. There were reportedly traces of blood on some of the benches.
The DCP said, “The teacher first dangled the girl from the first floor, then threw her down. She also beat up some other children.”
Chauhan added: “Geeta Deshwal first attacked the girl with scissors before flinging her down the first floor. Doctors said there were injuries on her head.”
An official of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi said the accused teacher has been suspended with immediate effect and further investigation was underway.
Reacting to the matter, Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) Chairperson Swati Maliwal tweeted, “A Delhi MCD school teacher first hit an innocent 5th class girl with a pair of scissors and then flings her off 1st floor. My team has reached to meet the girl. This teacher should be strictly punished!”
She has abused students before
The Station House Officer of the local Deshbandhu Gupta Road Police Station told ThePrint: “The teacher, who attacked the girl, had a fight with another teacher. The accused has been taken into custody. Based on the statements of eyewitnesses, a case under Section 307 (attempt to murder) has been prepared and an FIR has been lodged.”
The injured student sobbed in a video and said: “The teacher hit me with scissors. She tried to cut my hair and then threw me down.”
Other students said the teacher repeatedly beat up the children. Several said she has also threatened to kill them.
A friend of the victim said, “The teacher had locked the students in the class from inside. We were told that no one could say anything to anyone outside. We were asked to smash our lunch boxes and other things.”
Another said the teacher locked the door from inside, then took out their things and flung them around. Another teacher tried to intervene in the matter, but Deshwal apparently attempted to strangle her.
