Lucknow, Aug 17 (PTI) Uttar Pradesh witnessed widespread rainfall on Monday, with several places receiving heavy to very heavy showers, while Lucknow experienced prolonged spells of steady rain through the day.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast continued active monsoon conditions across the state during the week, with east Uttar Pradesh likely to remain the more affected region.
In the 24 hours ending 8.30 am on Monday, very heavy rainfall ranging from 115.6 mm to 204.4 mm was recorded at some places, with Churk in Sonbhadra receiving 147.2 mm, Baheri in Bareilly 141 mm and Koraon in Prayagraj 126 mm, the IMD’s Regional Meteorological Centre in Lucknow said.
Several other places also recorded heavy rain, including Robertsganj (95 mm), Rae Bareli (88.4 mm), Mohammadabad in Lakhimpur Kheri (84 mm), Meja in Prayagraj (75 mm), Ayodhya (75 mm), Prayagraj (73.4 mm) and Hasanganj in Unnao (72 mm).
The weather office said the state’s cumulative seasonal rainfall stood at 398.6 mm against the normal 496.3 mm, a deficit of 20 per cent as of August 17.
The deficit was eight per cent in west UP and 27 per cent in east UP.
Rainfall continued at several places through Monday, with the intensity varying across locations. The IMD attributed the active conditions to a “depression over coastal West Bengal and adjoining areas and the monsoon trough extending towards the Bay of Bengal”.
For Tuesday, the IMD has forecast “heavy rainfall at many places” across the state, with “very heavy rainfall” likely at some places, particularly in districts including Chitrakoot, Kaushambi, Prayagraj, Pratapgarh, Sonbhadra, Mirzapur, Chandauli, Varanasi, Jaunpur, Ghazipur, Bahraich, Lakhimpur Kheri, Sitapur, Barabanki, Bareilly, Pilibhit and Shahjahanpur.
It has also predicted “thunderstorms and lightning at isolated places” on Tuesday.
The IMD forecast indicates that east UP will remain the more active region later in the week. Heavy rain is expected in parts of the region on Wednesday, while “very heavy rainfall” is likely at several places on Thursday and Friday.
Heavy rain is likely to continue on Saturday and Sunday. In west UP, very heavy rain is forecast at some places on Tuesday, followed by a relative lull on Wednesday and Thursday, before heavy rain returns on Friday and Saturday.
Overall, the IMD said that “monsoon activity is likely to remain active over Uttar Pradesh during the coming week”, with rainfall expected to remain widespread but varying in intensity across different parts of the state. PTI KIS KSI KSI
