The central government is going to state its final stand on deporting Rohingya refugees in the next hearing on 3 October in the Supreme Court.

The Central government Monday filed a brief affidavit before the Supreme Court, reiterating its stand that the Rohingya Muslims are a “serious threat to national security”.

It has claimed that there is an organised influx of illegal immigrants from Myanmar through agents and touts into India via Benapole-Haridaspur (West Bengal), Hilli (West Bengal) and Sonamora (Tripura), Kolkata and Guwahati.

At the next hearing on 3 October, the government will submit reports prepared by security agencies in sealed envelopes to the apex court.

These reports are expected to support the government’s claims that many of the Rohingyas figure in the sinister designs of organisations like Pakistan’s Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) and other extremist groups such as ISIS. The reports are likely to support the government’s claim that this could destabilise India’s fragile northeast region.

The Centre will also communicate its final decision on deporting 40,000 Rohingyas at the next hearing.

Two Rohingya immigrants, Mohammad Salimullah and Mohammad Shaqir, had moved the apex court last month after the Centre directed state governments to set up district-level task forces to identify and deport illegal immigrants.

The National Human Rights Commission could intervene in the case to back Rohingya migrants.
