Jaipur, Aug 8 (PTI) Former Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot on Saturday urged the state government to make arrangements for alternative water management, fodder and employment in view of the rainfall deficit in the state.
He warned that the drinking water crisis could worsen and that the weak monsoon situation in Rajasthan has become a matter of concern.
Gehlot claimed that 246 of the state’s 693 dams were completely dry, while only 15 had filled up. He said the Bisalpur dam, which caters to the drinking water needs of around 1.16 crore people in four districts, including Jaipur and Ajmer, had not received even an inch of water this monsoon.
“The state has received 11 per cent less rainfall than normal till July 31, and drought-like conditions have emerged in 23 districts,” he said.
He said the state government should start making concrete preparations for alternative water management, fodder, employment and emergency arrangements.
The Congress leader expressed concern that if the situation did not improve in the coming days, the drinking water and irrigation crisis could assume serious proportions. PTI SDA PRK
