New Delhi:The G20 baton formally passed from India to Brazil Sunday as Prime Minister Narendra Modi handed over next year’s presidency to President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
Sunday was the last day of the final summit of heads of state, which saw key initiatives taken on issues impacting the world.
India pulled off a tremendous diplomatic feat on Saturday by bringing all countries together – the West and the Russia-China bloc – to unanimously agree on a declaration in spite of the invasion of Ukraine.
The consensus declaration avoided condemning Russia for the war, but called on all states not to use force to grab territory.
Other significant initiatives were the addition of the 55-member African Union to the grouping, significant commitments to tackling climate change and the announcement of the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor.
The last day began with Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcoming world leaders at Rajghat where they all paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi.
