Mumbai: Eight students on a picnic drowned at a beach in Maharashtra’s Raigad district on Thursday, police said, adding all the bodies have been recovered.

The students, of Class XI and XII, were part of a group from private coaching class ‘Winners Academy’ at Alandi in Pune district, police said.

They drowned at Diveagar beach, around 170 km from Mumbai.

A police official said a group of 48 individuals, comprising 25 boys, 17 girls and six teachers, had gone for a picnic at the beach under Dighi coastal police station limits.

Eight students ventured into the sea and were swept away after misjudging the depth of the water and current, he added.

Search and rescue teams rushed to the spot following an alert and recovered the bodies, he said.

Police personnel and local authorities are present at the site to carry out further legal and administrative proceedings, the official said.

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
