Darjeeling, Oct 22 (PTI) The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR) carried around 12,000 passengers on its heritage toy train joyrides during the first three weeks of October, an official said on Thursday.

The UNESCO World Heritage railway earned a revenue of Rs 1.41 crore between October 1 and 21, the official said.

To cater to increased tourist footfall, the DHR introduced special joyride services on short routes to offer visitors an opportunity to experience the heritage railway and the scenic beauty of the Darjeeling hills.

Since October 1, the DHR has been operating special joyrides between Darjeeling and Ghum, along with two round-trip services between Kurseong and Mahanadi, the official said.

One of the Kurseong-Mahanadi round trips is operated by a steam locomotive, while the other is hauled by a diesel engine, she added.

Darjeeling, popularly known as the Queen of the Hills, attracts tourists from across India and abroad. PTI AMR MNB

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
