New Delhi, Oct 9 (PTI) The BJP on Friday said it is close to a “historic” assembly election victory in Nandigram, which it described as a place once associated with Left-wing ideology, violence and “anti-development” activities.

The party also said it was close to winning in Rejinagar, where 71 per cent of voters belong to the minority community, and that encouraging trends were emerging from Assam’s Nagaon.

The BJP also welcomed the NDA’s victory in Puducherry.

Addressing a press conference, BJP national general secretary Smriti Irani thanked voters in states where assembly bypolls were held, saying the results proved that “democracy has won over mobocracy”.

“Democracy has delivered yet another resounding message to the mob,” she said, referring to the bypoll results.

Irani also targeted the Congress, alleging that it has taken no action against its own lawmaker facing sexual harassment charges.

“Congress talks of smashing patriarchy, but is not taking any action against its own MP facing sexual harassment charges,” she said, referring to now-dismissed JNU professor and Congress MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam. PTI KSH PK PRK

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
