New Delhi: Delhi Police has booked Jamia students Meeran Haider and Safoora Zargar under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) in a case related to communal violence in northeast Delhi over the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, said a lawyer.

Haider and Zargar, arrested for allegedly hatching a conspiracy to incite the communal riots in February, are in judicial custody. While Zargar is the media coordinator of Jamia Coordination Committee, Haider is a member of the committee.

The police has also booked Jawaharlal Nehru University student leader Umar Khalid under the UAPA in the case, said advocate Akram Khan who is representing Haider in the case.

Haider (35) is a PhD student and the president of RJD youth wing’s Delhi unit, while Zargar is an MPhil student of Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) university.

In the FIR, the police has claimed that the communal violence was a “premeditated conspiracy” which was allegedly hatched by Khalid and two others.

The students have also been booked for the offences of sedition, murder, attempt to murder, promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion and rioting.

Khalid had allegedly given provocative speeches at two different places and appealed to the citizens to come out on streets and block the roads during the visit of US President Donald Trump to spread propaganda at international level about how minorities in India are being , the FIR alleged.

In this conspiracy, firearms, petrol bombs, acid bottles and stones were collected at numerous homes, the FIR claimed.

Co-accused Danish was given the responsibility to gather people from two different places to take part in the riots, the police alleged.

Women and children were made to block the roads under the Jafrabad metro station on February 23 to create tension amidst the neighbourhood people, it said.

Over 20 film personalities, including Anurag Kashyap, Vishal Bhardwaj, Mahesh Bhatt and Ratna Pathak Shah, on Sunday had released a statement raising their voice against the arrest of the students and activists by Delhi Police for protesting against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act and demanded their release.

Following this, the police had said investigations into the JMI violence and northeast Delhi riot cases were done impartially, and arrests were made after analysis of forensic evidence.

In December last year, the police had allegedly entered the JMI campus after protests over the CAA, being held a few metres away from the varsity, turned violent.

Rajya Sabha MP and RJD leader Manoj Jha had tweeted, “Delhi Police called him for investigation and then received orders from above and arrested Meeran Haider, who has been helping people during the time of coronavirus outbreak.”

The Jamia Coordination Committee (JCC), a group comprising students and alumni from the varsity, had condemned the arrest and demanded his immediate release.

“The country is facing a massive health crisis, however, the state machinery is busy harassing and framing student activists in false cases to suppress voices of dissent,” they said.

The JCC said Haider was diligently working to provide ration to the needy during the lockdown. Communal clashes had broken out in northeast Delhi on February 24 after violence between citizenship law supporters and protesters spiralled out of control leaving at least 53 people dead and around 200 injured.

  1. India is facing paradoxical movement from gout: and authorities. They preventing or violating freedom of expression and freedom of speech. There is Kapil Mishra ,anurak thakur are injecting poison of terrerrism. In Kerala sasikal is the best poineer of them . They teaches illiterate people Muslims are their borned enemies, and they’re trying to make terrerrism here…..

  2. What a PhD & M.Phil, students have to do with politics ? apart becoming party members, focus should be on studies, research,.
I think they have lost sense of direction and know not where their hard work is needed.

Film fraternity, consider themselves to be intellectuals, but hardly show maturity ,they should stick to making better movies than what crap already is being made by them and cheap acts they do only to draw media attention.

Anyone performing unlawful acts deserves the treatment / punishment, any acts disrupting public peace, tranquility, compromising safety is not allowed, freedom of expression rights, does not give them right to misuse it for ulterior motives.

Be careful, not all Bhartiya / Indians are going to accept it.

  3. The only thing they are good at is protesting on streets and provoking illiterate people with fake news against the government. Did they win any nobel prize or science awards? Obviously not. So what do you expect the government to do? Build a throne?

  4. Modi-Shah government is so innocent/naive in giving away its desperate hatred for the Muslims SO EASILY. Two Muslim leaders are booked for a protracted riot in which MUSLIM homes were blown up by exploding LPG cylinders! of course, there were losses on the Hindu side too. Statistics will tell which community caused more destruction to the opposite side, and therefore was more organized to cause the mayhem; ordinary TV viewing indicated that the Muslims suffered more; but in the stringent UAPA booking there is not a single conspirator from the Hindu side! Wouldn’t you call this childlike, or innocent foolishness of the highest order?
It is for such “transparent” reasons that Islamic entities like OIC have started voicing their concerns in favor of Indian Muslims. When Modi was new as the PM, the same OIC had invited Sushma Swaraj at one of their meets, ignoring Pakistan’s protests. UAE has always been good to India, yet recently their Princess took note of Muslim-hatred being propagated in India.
By not being impartial to all communities as can be expected of the leader of a secular country, Narendra Modi is doing immense harm to india’s image abroad. It will trickle down to hostility towards Indians living in other countries, over time.

  5. Great job by Delhi Police !! Appreciate their Impartiality and Technology based scientific approach to maintain Law & order of Delhi. ??

  6. This is very good and very necessary. Great job done by Delhi government and Delhi police. Such elements must be arrested under non-bailable NSA. They are big danger to the nation and people. Long live Delhi police.

      • It’s Kapil Mishra, not Kapil Sharma !!!
And Kapil Mishra, Anurag thakur and Parvesh Verma are social workers of Modi and Amit Shah. Whatever criminal activity , hatred, hate speeches, inciting violence is a social work for BJP government….so what you expect from this biased investigation and injustice done ???
