New Delhi: A Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) delegation reached West Bengal’s Bankura Monday following the death of a volunteer’s father, allegedly after an attack by local Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers over his son’s participation in the ‘School Thik Karo’ (fix state-run schools) movement, and issued four demands with a 10-day deadline.

The CJP has demanded the inclusion of names of all unidentified people present during the assault in the FIR, a court-monitored investigation, a public school in the deceased’s name and round-the-clock security for the CJP volunteer.

CJP co-convenor Ashutosh Ranka and several CJP members reached Karasundi, Bankura, Monday afternoon, where CJP supporter Abdul Hafiz’s father died after the father-son duo were allegedly attacked by local BJP workers with sharp objects.

Abdul and his father had conducted a social audit of a government school.

His father is said to have succumbed to the injuries Saturday night.

The CJP delegation told the media that after a long conversation with Abdul, his mother and grandmother, they have drawn a memorandum of four demands.

The first is that the FIR include all the unidentified persons involved. “Register an FIR against all accused individuals and trace all the absconded miscreants involved in the fatal attack and ensure that every person responsible is brought to justice.”

The second demand is for an impartial investigation. “Order a court monitored, independent investigation into allegations of police complicity, negligence and misconduct in the handling of the incident,” the CJP stated.

The CJP also demanded round-the-clock security to Abdul and his family to ensure their safety. Following Abdul’s request of not wanting compensation, the CJP demanded the setting up of a public school in the name of his deceased father.

“We have issued a strict 10-day ultimatum to the local administration to act on these demands. If the authorities fail to take concrete action within this period, the CJP will mobilise supporters and hold a peaceful gherao of the District Magistrate’s office, demanding immediate justice and accountability,” read CJP’s memorandum.

The West Bengal police have filed an FIR under sections of the BNS related to criminal conspiracy, attempt to murder, causing grievous hurt and murder.

It has arrested eight people including Sekh Azaad, Srikanta Majhi, Prasanta Ruidas, Rohit Majhi, Bablu Majhi, Santu Majhi, Tinku Kewra, and Oshtom Majhi. Of the eight, only Azad, Srikanta Majhi and Oshtom Majhi were named in the FIR. “The accused have been produced before the Bishnupur sub-divisional court. The court has remanded Azad, Srikanta Majhi and Oshtom majhi to eight days of police custody, while the rest have been sent to judicial custody,” said a senior police officer who is aware of the matter.

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:

  1. If I am not wrong, BJP assumed charge in West Bengal on May 4, 2026. It’s just been over three months now.
How on earth is the BJP responsible for the pathetic state of affairs in Bengal? Be it in primary schools, secondary schools, colleges or universities – everywhere the situation is appalling. All thanks to 34 year communist rule followed by 15 years of Mamata rule.
How can the BJP be held responsible for the sordid state of affairs in Bengal?
In a way, it also thoroughly exposes the CJP and it’s leaders. Till the time TMC was in power, they did not make any noise at all – just like Ms. Stela Dey of ThePrint. Now that the BJP is in charge, suddenly they have become so aggrieved and concerned regarding the pathetic situation in Bengal – again, just like Ms. Stela Dey of ThePrint.

  2. It’s sad that the locals have not meted out the infamous ‘egg therapy’ treatment to Ashutosh Ranka.
The Bengal Police is a competent force – used to be praised as the Indian Scotland Yard during the colonial time.
Hope it can treat the cockroaches well and put them where they belong.
