New Delhi, Oct 9 (PTI) The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) will mark its 33rd anniversary with a function at the Vigyan Bhawan here on October 12, and Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant will be the chief guest, the body said on Friday.

In the last 33 years, the NHRC has handled over 24 lakh cases, including 3,100 cases of suo motu cognisance, it said.

And the NHRC has recommended monetary relief of more than Rs 274 crore in 9,085 cases to victims of human rights violations, the commission said in a statement.

The number of cases registered — 24,33,716 — since its inception on October 12, 1993, includes 54,673 complaints and 119 suo motu instances registered during the period — October 1, 2025 to September 30, the NHRC added.

“During this period, the commission conducted 80 spot enquiries; disposed of 53,733 cases and recommended more than Rs 9.7 crore as monetary relief in 157 cases to victims of human rights violations,” it said.

The NHRC is a statutory body constituted under the Protection of Human Rights Act.

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) is organising a function to celebrate its foundation day at Vigyan Bhawan on October 12, the statement said.

Chief Justice of India, Justice Surya Kant, will address the event as the chief guest in the presence of NHRC chairperson, Justice V Ramasubramanian (retd), and panel members, Justice Bidyut Ranjan Sarangi (retd), Vijaya Bharathi Sayani and Priyank Kanoongo, Secretary General, Piyush Goyal, other senior officers and dignitaries, it said.

The foundation day celebration provides an opportunity to reflect upon the commission’s journey and renew its commitment to protect and promote human rights.

The function will be followed by a national conference on the theme ‘Water as the Elixir of Life: Advancing Human Dignity through the Right to Water’.

The conference will bring together experts and stakeholders, academicians, researchers and members of civil society and human rights defenders to deliberate on the human rights dimensions of access to safe and adequate water, with a focus on advancing human dignity and strengthening water security. Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
