Puducherry, Oct 4 (PTI) Hectic campaigning by the political parties for the October 6 bypoll for the Thattanchavadi Assembly constituency in the union territory came to a screeching end by 6 pm on Sunday.

Before the conclusion of the campaigning, leaders of political parties organised motorcycle rallies in a last-ditch effort to impress voters. Chief Minister N Rangasamy, Home Minister of Puducherry A Namassivayam, MLAs and cadres of the NDA participated in a rally.

Thattanchavady seat fell vacant after the AINRC leader and Chief Minister N Rangasamy, who emerged victorious in this seat and the Mangalam constituency in the April 9 Assembly election, chose to vacate this constituency, while retaining Mangalam.

There are 11 candidates, including the AINRC candidate Ashok Anand, DMK nominee K Sedhu Selvam, Congress candidate E Vinayagam, CPI candidate M A Saleem and Naam Tamilar Katchi candidate S Karthi Kumari, in the fray.

Thattanchavadi, an urban constituency that consists of Oulgaret municipal areas, has a total of 26,921 voters. This constituency is a pocket borough of Rangasamy.

The Congress candidate has the backing of the Tamizhaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) in the present by-election.

DMK president M K Stalin, through a video conference on Saturday, had appealed to voters of Thattanchavady to extend support to his party’s candidate.

He had accused CM Rangasamy of ignoring the people and failing to put in sustained efforts to get statehood for Puducherry.

The AIADMK, which is part of the AINRC-led NDA, has also been campaigning for the AINRC candidate.

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
