Prayagraj/Lucknow, Aug 8 (PTI) Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was allegedly shown black flags by some people while leaving Anand Bhawan in Prayagraj here on Saturday, a local party leader said, while Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya termed Gandhi’s Prayagraj visit a “flop show”.
Local Congress leader Irshad Ullah said some people showed black flags to Gandhi when he was leaving Anand Bhawan to attend the ‘Chhatron Ki Goonj’ programme at KP Ground.
“We foiled the attempt,” Irshad Ullah said. He also questioned the local administration and the Local Intelligence Unit (LIU), claiming that the party had informed the agency in advance about the possibility of a protest.
Despite this, no action was taken, he said.
Meanwhile, Maurya on X described it as a “flop show” despite support from the Samajwadi Party.
“Despite the open support of Akhilesh Yadav and the full strength of the SP-Congress alliance, Rahul Gandhi’s Prayagraj visit proved to be a flop show,” Maurya said.
He alleged that a Congress workers’ convention was being presented as a “students’ programme” to cover up the political failure of the event.
Maurya also accused the Congress of having a “double standard” on issues concerning the youth, alleging that the party remains silent on such issues in states where it is in power while raising them in BJP-ruled states.
He claimed that the youth of Prayagraj and Uttar Pradesh support Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP, and asserted that the BJP will emerge victorious against the SP-Congress alliance in the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections.
Earlier in the day, Gandhi addressed the ‘Chhatron Ki Goonj’ programme at KP Ground, where thousands of students attended despite waterlogging and muddy patches at several places.
Gandhi accused the BJP-led government of doing injustice to students and urged young people to seek change through “love” rather than hatred.
