Kolkata, Oct 9 (PTI) West Bengal Chief Secretary Manoj Agarwal on Friday sent a legal notice to TMC MP Mahua Moitra over controversial social media posts against him, and demanded an unconditional apology and Rs 10 crore as payment of damages for alleged defamation.

Moitra has been asked to delete the two posts within 24 hours of receiving the notice and tender a written apology.

Agarwal, who was a former Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of West Bengal, claimed that Moitra’s remarks harmed his reputation and damaged his integrity and professional standing.

The TMC MP has also been asked to give a written undertaking that she would not make similar “defamatory remarks” in future.

In the posts, Moitra accused Agarwal of being responsible for the alleged illegal disenfranchisement of lakhs of legitimate voters in the state.

In the notice, Agarwal’s lawyer rejected the allegations, and said the former CEO neither indulged in vote theft nor committed any electoral malpractice.

“He had merely discharged his official duties in accordance with the law and the Election Commission’s directions,” it stated.

The notice seeks Rs 10 crore as compensation for alleged defamation, besides Rs 50,000 towards legal and incidental expenses. PTI SCH RBT

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
