Aluru (Andhra Pradesh), May 12 (PTI) The Andhra Pradesh Government Railway Police on Tuesday opened fire after two people suspected of tampering with railway signals, allegedly pelted stones at a patrol team near Nidubrolu railway station here in Guntur district.

According to Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) railways, Guntur, P Akkeshwar Rao, the incident occurred around 2.30 am near the home signal point at the 377th milestone when police noticed two persons moving suspiciously near a railway home signal during a routine patrol.

“They pelted stones at police when questioned, following which 10 rounds were fired in self-defence. However, the suspects escaped into nearby agricultural fields,” Rao told PTI.

Rao said police recovered a wire cutter, electrical tester and hand gloves from the spot, which were allegedly being used to tamper with railway signals.

The DSP said the suspects were allegedly part of a gang targeting train passengers by stopping trains through signal tampering before snatching gold chains and valuables from civilians.

He said the gang earlier used Alarm Chain Pulling (ACP) method, wherein offenders travelling inside trains allegedly pulled emergency chains, snatched valuables and shifted coaches to evade detection.

Meanwhile, police are in the process of registering a case and conducting searches to trace the absconding suspects. PTI MS STH ROH
