Chennai, Jul 29 (PTI) PMK leader Anbumani Ramadoss was unanimously elected as the party president at its general council meeting held here on Wednesday.
The decision was taken at the meeting, chaired by Anbumani, in Mamallapuram here.
A party release said S Vadivel Ravanan and M Tilagabama were elected as the party’s general secretary and treasurer respectively.
The meeting follows the retirement of party founder S Ramadoss from active politics, a decision reached after he and Anbumani resolved their differences.
The general council resolved to offer its full support to Anbumani’s initiatives to strengthen the party.
Out of the total 31 resolutions passed at the meeting, the party focused on seeking an exemption for Tamil Nadu from the NEET exam.
The PMK also demanded that the state assembly re-enact the exemption legislation and forward it to the central government.
The party urged all political parties in Tamil Nadu to join hands to secure the President’s assent for this bill, the resolution said.
On the Mekedatu row, the general council appealed to the Tamil Nadu government to pursue a permanent solution to revoke the 2018 permission granted for the preparation of the Mekedatu dam’s Detailed Project Report (DPR).
The meeting raised concerns about the unabated circulation of narcotics in the state, alleging that though the issue peaked under the previous regime, it remains a threat.
Following the change of government, Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay ordered the formation of 65 special squads to tackle the drug problem.
Nevertheless, the movement of narcotics continues unabated across Tamil Nadu. Drugs are readily available, particularly near schools, colleges, and crowded public places, it said.
If the drug menace is not brought under control immediately, it will lead to a rise in crime and create law-and-order issues. Therefore, the party demanded that the movement of narcotics be suppressed with an iron hand, it added.
The PMK also said the government must refuse the inclusion of a University Grants Commission (UGC) representative on the Vice-Chancellor search committee and abandon the decision to amend university laws. PTI SNR SNR ROH
