New Delhi: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has nominated Delhi Commission for Women chief Swati Maliwal for the Rajya Sabha.
The party’s political affairs committee also renominated jailed leader Sanjay Singh and N.D. Gupta to the Upper House for their second terms. The elections are on 19 January.
Singh, who was arrested in connection with a scrapped liquor policy, was allowed by a Delhi court to file his nomination from jail. His term ends on 27 January.
Known for her strong views on women’s rights, particularly crime against women in the national capital, Maliwal has advocated stricter laws, and rooted for gender equality.
She was appointed DCW chief in 2015, where she has helmed several initiatives to address issues such as acid attacks, sexual harassment and women’s safety.
