Indore, Aug 16 (PTI) Fifty-one robotic bariatric surgeries were performed in a single day as part of ‘Surgical Swaraj’ here, a campaign aimed at showcasing India’s growing capabilities in advanced robotic and minimally invasive healthcare.

The initiative was led by senior bariatric and robotic surgeon Dr Mohit Bhandari on the occasion of the country’s 80th Independence Day and brought together six robotic surgical systems and a multidisciplinary team of surgeons, anaesthesiologists, nursing professionals, technicians and support staff for coordinated execution of the procedures.

The 51 patients included 30 men and 21 women, with an average age of 43.6 years. Their ages ranged from 21 to 77 years, while the average patient weight was 122 kg.

“‘Surgical Swaraj’ is not just about performing a large number of surgeries. It is about demonstrating what Indian healthcare is capable of achieving through technology, teamwork, meticulous planning and clinical excellence,” Dr Bhandari said.

He said the deployment of six robotic systems reflected the growing capabilities of India’s surgical ecosystem and its ability to deliver advanced procedures at scale.

Bhandari, who claimed to have performed more than 40,000 bariatric surgeries, heads MOHAK Bariatrics and Robotics in Indore.

“The initiative carries special significance because it coincides with India’s Independence Day. Surgical Swaraj symbolises the nation’s journey towards self-reliance in healthcare and medical technology,” Dr Bhandari added.

The programme sought to highlight the increasing adoption of robotic technology in bariatric and minimally invasive surgery, besides demonstrating the importance of advanced infrastructure and coordinated medical teams in performing complex procedures. PTI PLB MNK MNK
