Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh Police has suspended sub-inspector Devendra Yadav, who was booked on murder charges after a ‘gang rape’ victim’s father died suspiciously a day after filing the complaint, for being “absent from duty”. Yadav’s two sons Deepu Yadav and Saurabh Yadav are accused in the ‘gang rape’ case.
Three other policemen — two sub-inspectors and a constable posted in Kanpur district — have also been suspended for “negligence in inquiry” into the two cases of ‘gang rape’ and ‘murder’.
Two persons, Golu Yadav and Deepu, have been arrested for allegedly raping the 13-year-old girl, while Saurabh, who was accused of threatening her family after they lodged the complaint, is still absconding.
SI Devendra Yadav was posted in Kannauj district.
Speaking to ThePrint, Kannauj Superintendent of Police Prashant Verma confirmed his suspension for “remaining absent from duty”. He said Yadav had been sent to Jalaun district on an official duty but he neither reported back to work in Kannauj, nor intimated the office about his absence from duty.
In a video statement released by Kanpur’s Deputy Inspector General Preetinder Singh said Circle Officer (CO) Ghatampur is conducting the inquiry.
Sajeti police station beat in-charge Ram Shiromani and constable Adesh Kumar were suspended for alleged negligence in the gang rape case, while Ghatampur police post in-charge Abdul Kalam faced the action for alleged negligence in the accident case, he said.
”We have arrested two accused (in the rape case), one is still absconding. Five teams of police are searching for him,” the DIG added.

Ghatampur is the area where the ‘gang rape’ victim’s father was run over by a truck, near the community health centre where the girl was undergoing her medical examination, the police had said earlier.
After family members lodged an FIR alleging foul play in the death, SI Yadav was booked for murder, charged with “engineering the hit-and-run on the highway”.
The FIR said Yadav plotted to kill the girl’s father and make it look like an accident.
A departmental inquiry has been initiated in the matter, the DIG said, adding, “Superintendent of Police, Rural, Brajesh Srivastava has been asked to conduct the inquiry and submit the findings to me at the earliest.”
While the alleged rape took place Monday night, prime accused Golu Yadav was arrested Wednesday and Deepu on Thursday.
The family had earlier claimed they were facing threats from Deepu’s family after they lodged the complaint.
