Raipur, Aug 17 (PTI) Two prominent BJP members from Chhattisgarh have been appointed to key positions in the party’s new national team, one of them as its social media department head, under BJP president Nitin Nabin, reflecting the state’s importance in the saffron organisation.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday overhauled its national team under new party president Nitin Nabin, bringing in many new faces and some prominent leaders.

Lok Sabha MP from the state Roopkumari Choudhary and Chhattisgarh Medical Services Corporation Ltd chairman Deepak Mhaskey have been appointed president of the BJP Mahila Morcha and the party’s social media department head, respectively.

Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai and state BJP president Kiran Deo congratulated the two leaders, and said the appointments reflected the central leadership’s “unwavering trust and respect” for Chhattisgarh’s dedicated party workers.

Choudhary and Mhaskey visited the ruling party’s state office in Raipur soon after their appointments where they were welcomed and congratulated by BJP leaders and workers.

The Lok Sabha MP from Mahasamund thanked the party leadership for the new responsibility and said she would work for women’s rights and dignity.

According to Choudhary, her primary objective as the BJP Mahila Morcha president would be to connect women, who constitute nearly half of the population, with the nation’s development process. She would strive to live up to the trust placed in an ordinary party worker with complete dedication, hard work and commitment, the MP asserted.

She said she had worked at various levels in the organisation and earlier served as the BJP district president in Mahasamund when Nabin was the party’s state in-charge.

“Now that I have been given this new responsibility, I will certainly work for the rights and dignity of women. Women’s participation would be crucial to achieving Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a developed India by 2047,” she stressed.

Referring to Modi’s focus on the aspirations of Generation Z, Choudhary noted India was a country of young people and she would work to ensure better opportunities for them.

She thanked PM Modi, BJP president Nabin, and central and state party leadership for giving her the key responsibility.

Describing his appointment as a major responsibility, Mhaskey said an ordinary party worker like him has been entrusted with such an important role.

“Those who misuse social media and create confusion by spreading misinformation will be countered by our team by ensuring that the correct information reaches people,” he told reporters here.

“Our target is to ensure the BJP’s victory (in polls). State and national teams will work together towards this goal,” the academic and former Engineers India Ltd board member emphasised.

“Nitin ji was our state in-charge and I got an opportunity to work with him. I also received his guidance while working in Chhattisgarh. Whatever responsibility is assigned to us at the national level, we will fulfil it,” he said.

Mhaskey insisted the BJP’s social media wing would work to strengthen digital communication and ensure that the government’s welfare policies and programmes reach people through digital platforms.

Choudhary, 50, belongs to the Agharia community, an influential OBC group with a significant presence in Raigarh and Mahasamund regions of Chhattisgarh.

A resident of Harratar village in Saraipali area of Mahasamund district, she currently lives in Basna town, a BJP functionary said.

She holds a master’s degree in political science and began her electoral career as a Zila Panchayat member from the Saraipali area in 2005. She was elected BJP MLA from Basna in the 2013 Assembly elections.

In 2014, Choudhary became a state secretary of the BJP. She was denied a ticket in the 2018 Assembly polls and was appointed president of the BJP’s Mahasamund district unit in 2019.

In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, she was elected from Mahasamund and appointed vice-president of the Chhattisgarh BJP last year.

Mhaskey, 58, is currently chairman of Chhattisgarh Medical Services Corporation Ltd. He has served as a state BJP spokesperson in the past.

A former chemistry professor, Mhaskey has been associated with agriculture and has more than 35 years of experience in farming and organic agriculture, the functionary said.

The academic-politician has been involved in BJP’s social media and communication-related activities and is known for his work in data collection, analysis and governance-linked roles, he said.

In a social media post, Chief Minister Sai congratulated Choudhary on her appointment as president of the BJP Mahila Morcha and said her commitment to women’s empowerment and the organisation had always been noteworthy.

In another post, Sai congratulated Mhaskey on his new role, and said his organisational capabilities, and effective use of technology would provide fresh impetus to the BJP’s digital outreach.

State BJP president Deo thanked the central leadership for giving Chhattisgarh two important responsibilities in the newly-announced national team.

He said the appointment of Choudhary and Mhaskey reflected the “unwavering trust and respect” of Nabin and the central leadership towards dedicated party workers from Chhattisgarh, where the BJP came to power in December 2023 after dislodging the Congress.
