New Delhi, Aug 18 (PTI) The Delhi Congress on Tuesday said 13,031 booth-level agents of the party are actively involved in the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, and they will ensure that no eligible voter is removed from the voters’ list.
Top Delhi unit leaders also reviewed the party’s preparedness for the upcoming municipal polls and Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) elections.
Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee president Devender Yadav, at a meeting of the party’s Parliamentary Affairs Committee at Rajiv Bhawan, said the party’s Booth-Level Agent-2 (BLA-2) network has been active across Delhi, and they would take issues in the SIR to voters at the booth level.
At the meeting, the leaders also discussed the possible exclusion of around 47 lakh electors from the draft electoral roll following the revision.
“A total of 13,031 BLA-2 of the Congress worked actively in the SIR. The BLA-2 of the Aam Aadmi Party was not even half visible,” Yadav said in a statement.
He said the possible exclusion of “over 45 lakh” electors from the draft electoral roll was a “blot on democracy” and the party would campaign against the exercise at the grassroots level.
At the meeting, the Congress leaders discussed preparations for the MCD (Municipal Corporation of Delhi) elections.
Yadav said the party has replaced 180 block presidents and added that more than 25,000 workers are now connected to its district-, block-, mandalam- and sector-level structures.
Congress treasurer Ajay Maken stressed the need for the party’s organisational machinery to focus on issues affecting people rather than merely seeking media attention.
“We should not raise issues with the newspapers, but raise issues that newspapers are forced to raise,” Maken said.
Calling the party’s booth-level presence a potential strength, Maken pointed out that in the last election, each of Delhi’s 11,989 booths recorded more than 15 votes for the Congress.
AICC Delhi in-charge Qazi Nizamuddin said the party needed to strengthen its booth-level presence ahead of the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) elections scheduled for September.
“Since the DUSU elections are in September, which comes after the student movement, the NSUI will have to work actively to make its presence felt in these elections,” he said.
The Parliamentary Affairs Committee also passed a resolution condemning a reported “purification” ritual conducted after Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge addressed a rally in Uttarakhand’s Haldwani, with the party demanding an investigation into the incident and action against those involved.
The meeting was attended by Maken, Nizamuddin, Mahila Congress president Alka Lamba, Rajendra Pal Gautam, former MP Udit Raj and other senior Congress leaders. PTI MSJ RUK RUK
