New Delhi: An old video from Kulgam is being passed off as the result of Indian military action on civilians following the scrapping of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status.

The video shows a mob carrying bodies amid demolished houses, while a woman cries in the background.

Tweeted by Pakistani journalist Irshad Bhatti on 9 August, the video has been retweeted over 7,000 times and liked by over 15,000 Twitter users.

Bhatti tweeted the video with a caption in Urdu that roughly translates to, “Oh Allah … help the oppressed.” The video has had over 1.38 lakh views.

Another twitter user, Abdullah Gul, son of Pakistan’s former Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) DG Hamid Gul, tweeted the same video on August 10 fuelling the same misinformation. Gul’s tweet, in Urdu, translated into , “Massacre started in Kashmir. This video has been sent by a Kashmiri sister.”

“We are providing diplomatic, moral and political support… Isn’t Kashmir Pakistan? Did Tipu Sultan go that way?” he tweeted.

Gul’s video was seen by more than 60,000 users.

This video, however, is from 21 October last year when seven civilians were killed and a few others were injured due to a blast in South Kashmir’s Laroo village based in Kulgam.

According to the media reports, the Kulgam blast happened during an encounter between security forces and militants at the gunfight site.

The video going viral now was shared on YouTube, last year, under the caption “Kashmir News” on the day of the Kulgam blast.

According to a latest report by news agency Reuters, Indian police has used tear gas and pellets to fight back over 10,000 protesters in Kashmir in Srinagar Friday.

However, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) Saturday refuted the report by calling it ‘completely incorrect’.
