New Delhi: For the first time in over six months, the number of Covid-19 deaths reported in a single day fell below 300 in India Monday.
While active cases continued to decline, the number of tests conducted in the country over the last 24 hours drastically reduced to below eight lakh. Since the end of September, the number of daily tests had remained over the eight lakh mark.
Daily cases
In the last 24 hours, India reported 20,021 new cases of Covid-19 across the country — the lowest since 1 July.
Active cases
On Monday, the number of active Covid-19 cases in India fell to 2,77,301. This accounts for 2.72 per cent of the total cases in India so far. India’s active cases account for 1.2 per cent of the current active coronavirus cases reported from across the world.
Number of deaths
As many as 279 Covid-19 deaths were reported in the country in the last 24 hours. Throughout last week, the number of daily deaths had remained below 400. Daily deaths have not gone below 300 since 10 June.
The total coronavirus death toll in India, since the beginning of the pandemic, now stands at 1,47,901.
Mortality rate
Punjab’s case fatality rate, which has been the highest in the country, further increased to 3.20 this week. Meanwhile, Maharashtra — the state with the highest number of Covid-19 deaths — has the second highest CFR of 2.56.
Sikkim’s fatality rate reduced further to 2.13. India’s overall case fatality rate is at 1.45.
Daily tests
The number of Covid-19 tests in the last 24 hours reduced to 7,15,397. While it is usual for the number of tests conducted in the weekends to be lower than those conducted over weekdays, this is the first time since 28 September that the number of daily tests have dropped to below 8 lakh.
A total of 16,88,18,054 tests have been carried out in India since the beginning of the pandemic.
Positivity rate
The fall in the number of tests led to an increase in the positivity rate to 2.7 per cent.
Overall test positivity rate, calculated since the beginning of the pandemic, however has fallen to is 6.0 per cent.
Recovered cases
In the last 24 hours, 21,131 Covid-19 patients were discharged from across the country. Since the beginning of the pandemic 97,82,669 people have recovered from the infection.
Total cases
A total of 1,02,07,871 coronavirus cases have been reported in India since the beginning of the pandemic. The largest number of cases so far have been reported from Maharashtra (19,19,550), followed by Karnataka (9,16,256) and Andhra Pradesh (8,81,061).
States with the highest active cases
Kerala has the highest number of active cases in India. This further increased to 65,344, with 4,905 new cases reported in the last 24 hours.
The state reported 25 deaths in the last 24 hours, bringing the coronavirus death toll to 2,976. So far, a total of 7,40,516 cases have been detected in the state.
Active cases in Maharashtra also increased to 60,347. With 3,314 new cases reported in the last 24 hours, the total number of coronavirus cases in the state increased to 19,19,550.
The state continues to report the highest number of deaths in the country every day. As many as 66 deaths were reported in the last 24 hours. This brought Maharashtra’s total Covid-19 toll to 49,255.
In Uttar Pradesh, 900 new Covid-19 cases were reported in the last 24 hours, bringing the total case count in the state to 5,78,568. Active cases in the state fell to 15,371 Monday.
As many as 8,306 people have died due to Covid, with 13 deaths in the last 24 hours.
West Bengal reported 1,435 new cases in the state in the last 24 hours, but the active cases count dropped to 13,774 Monday.
Twenty nine people in the state have succumbed to the disease in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of deaths in the state to 9,598. A total of 5,47,443 cases have been reported from the state.
In Chhattisgarh, 825 new cases were detected in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of cases detected from the state so far to 2,75,149. Active cases in the state dropped to 13,701 Monday.
As many as 3,293 people died due to Covid-19, with 18 deaths reported in the last 24 hours.
