India’s active Covid cases cross 1.8 lakh, Maharashtra sees highest spike since October

New Delhi: For the first time since January, active Covid-19 cases in India have increased to over 1.8 lakh. Maharashtra reported over 11,000 new cases in a single day, which is the highest in nearly five months.

In the last 24 hours, 18,599 new cases of Covid-19 have been reported across the country. Maharashtra alone reported nearly 60 per cent of the new cases.

Active cases in India increased to 1,88,747 in the past 24 hours. This is the first time since 25 January that active cases have crossed 1.8 lakh. Maharashtra has the highest number of active cases in the country, followed by Kerala, Punjab, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu.

In the last 24 hours, 97 people across the country have died of Covid-19. The overall death toll in India is now 1,57,853. Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Delhi and West Bengal have recorded the highest number of deaths since the beginning of the pandemic.

The overall fatality rate for India is now 1.41. Punjab’s case fatality reduced to 3.14 but is still the highest in the country. Maharashtra’s CFR reduced to 2.36 while Sikkim’s fatality rate reduced to 2.18.

In the last 24 hours, 5,37,764 Covid-19 tests have been conducted across 1,224 government and 1,178 private laboratories.

A total of 22,19,68,271 tests have been carried out in the country since the beginning of the pandemic.

Positivity rate

Due to the decline in the number of tests conducted, the test positivity increased to 3.4 per cent in the last 24 hours. The overall positivity, calculated since the beginning of the pandemic, is 5 per cent.

Recovered cases

As many as 14,278 Covid-19 patients were discharged across India in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of recoveries since the beginning of the pandemic to 1,08,82,798. India’s overall recovery rate has dropped to 96.91 per cent from more than 97 per cent last week.

A total of 2,09,89,010 vaccine doses have been administered in India so far, with 66,666 doses given in the last 24 hours. Of these, 1,72,27,903 are first doses while 37,61,107 have received the second dose of the vaccine.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, 1,12,29,398 people in India have been infected with Covid-19. The highest number of cases so far have been reported from Maharashtra, followed by Kerala and Karnataka.

States with highest active cases

In the last 24 hours, Maharashtra reported 11,141 new cases of Covid-19 — the highest since 11 October. The state’s active cases have now increased to 99,205.

A total of 22,19,727 cases have been reported from the state since the beginning of the pandemic. Of these, 52,478 have died with 38 deaths reported in the last 24 hours.

Active cases in Kerala fell to 41,162, with 2,100 new cases reported in the last 24 hours. A total of 10,77,327 cases have been detected in the state since the beginning of the pandemic.

With 13 deaths reported in the last 24 hours, the state’s Covid death toll increased to 4,300.

Active cases in Punjab increased to 7,497, with 1,043 new cases of Covid-19 reported in the last 24 hours. This has taken the total number of cases detected in the state to 1,88,391.

The death toll in Punjab also increased to 5,927, with 17 deaths reported in the last 24 hours.

In Karnataka active cases rose to 6,881, with 622 new cases detected in the last 24 hours.

A total of 9,55,015 Covid-19 cases have been reported from the state. Of these, 12,362 people have died, with three deaths reported in the last 24 hours.

In Tamil Nadu, active cases increased to 3,997, with 567 new cases detected in the last 24 hours. This has brought the total number of cases detected from the state to 8,55,121.

With one death reported in the last 24 hours, the state’s Covid death toll stands at 12,518.
