Daily deaths in Maharashtra less than 1% of new infections, but active cases highest in India

New Delhi: The ratio of daily cases to deaths in Maharashtra has reduced drastically since the initial phase of the pandemic.

While in April last year, the percentage of Covid-19 deaths in the state went up to nearly 10 per cent on some days, currently, the percentage of daily deaths over new cases reported every day has dropped to below 1 per cent.

Despite this, Maharashtra remains one of the states with the highest case fatality rates in India.

Active cases

Active cases in India increased to 9,79,608 — the highest since October last year. Maharashtra continues to have the highest share of active cases in the country.

Over the last 24 hours, 1,31,968 people tested positive for Covid-19 across the country. This is the highest number of cases India has reported in a single day since the beginning of the pandemic.

As many as 780 people in the country died of Covid-19 over the last 24 hours. This brings the country’s total Covid-19 toll to 1,67,642.

Punjab’s case fatality rate is 2.78 — the highest in the country. Maharashtra’s CFR reduced to 1.76 while that of Sikkim reduced to 2.15. The overall CFR for India is now 1.28 per cent.

The rapid drop in fatality rate can be attributed to the rise in active case numbers.

Daily vaccinations

In the last 24 hours, 36,91,511 vaccine doses were delivered across the country. So far, 9,43,34,262 vaccine doses have been administered in India.

As many as 1,18,77,740 people have received both doses of the vaccine in India so far.

In the last 24 hours, 13,64,205 Covid-19 tests were carried out across 1,230 government laboratories and 1,219 private laboratories. Over 25.4 crore tests have been carried out in the country since the beginning of the pandemic.

Test Positivity Rate

The test positivity over the last 24 hours reduced to 9.6 per cent with an increase in number of tests conducted. Positivity above 10 per cent indicates that testing is inadequate.

As many as 61,899 patients have been discharged from Covid-19 hospitals across India in the last 24 hours. This brings the total number of recoveries since the beginning of the pandemic to 1,19,13,292.

As many as 1,30,60,542 people in India have been infected with Covid-19 since the beginning of the pandemic. The largest number of cases so far have been reported from Maharashtra, followed by Kerala and Karnataka.

States with highest active cases

Active Covid cases in Maharashtra increased to 5,22,762, with 56,286 new cases reported from the state since yesterday.

A total of 32,29,547 people from Maharashtra have been infected with Covid-19 since the beginning of the pandemic. Of these, 57,028 people have died, with 376 deaths reported in the last 24 hours.

Chhattisgarh reported 10,652 new cases in the last 24 hours — the highest in the state since the beginning of the pandemic. This takes the number of active cases to 68,125.

A total of 4,07,231 cases were detected from the state since the beginning of the pandemic. As many as 94 Covid-19 patients have died in the state in the last 24 hours, which takes the death toll to 4,563.

Active cases in Karnataka increased to 53,414, with 6,570 new cases reported in the last 24 hours.

A total of 10,40,130 Covid-19 cases have been reported from the state since the beginning of the pandemic.

With 36 deaths reported in the last 24 hours, the death toll increased to 12,767.

In Uttar Pradesh, active cases increased to 39,338 Friday, with 8,474 new cases of Covid-19 reported in the last 24 hours. A total of 6,54,404 people in the state have reported to be Covid positive since the beginning of the pandemic.

The state’s Covid-19 death toll increased to 9,003, with 39 deaths reported in the last 24 hours.

In Kerala, active Covid-19 cases increased to 33,936, with 6,570 new cases reported in the last 24 hours.

This takes the total number of cases detected from the state to 11,48,947 since the beginning of the pandemic. With 18 deaths reported in the last 24 hours, the state’s Covid-19 death toll increased to 4,728.
