89,706 fresh cases with 60% only from 5 states, Punjab records highest mortality rate at 2.95%

New Delhi: India has recorded over 1,000 Covid deaths every day in September so far even though the case fatality rate (CFR) shows a downward trend. The only exception to this is Punjab, where the CFR continues to rise and it has now replaced Gujarat at the bottom of the chart.

India’s testing numbers continue to stay above 10 lakh but its desired effect on the positivity rate still seems some way off.

Active cases

The total number of active cases in the country stands at 8,97,394, so far. Maharashtra is leading this tally with more than 2,40,000 whereas Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh follow with more than 96,000 cases each. Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu contribute to 61 per cent of the total active cases.

In the past 24 hours, 1,115 people died taking the total death toll to 73,890. India has recorded over 1,000 cases every day of September. However, the health ministry is continuing to focus on recoveries and increasing testing numbers instead of the rising death toll.

Punjab has now replaced Gujarat as the state with the highest CFR in the country at 2.95 per cent. It is also the only state where the value of this metric is going up, whereas India as a whole has registered a downward trend.

More than 11.5 lakh Covid samples have been tested in the last 24 hours and over 5.18 crore tests have been conducted since the beginning of the pandemic. From one testing lab in Pune in January 2020, today the country has 1,678 labs, including 1,040 labs in the government sector and 638 private labs.

A total of 89,706 new cases have been reported in the last 24 hours, of which Maharashtra has alone contributed more than 20,000 and Andhra Pradesh has contributed more than 10,000. Of these new cases, 60 per cent have been reported from only five states.

These numbers have increased the positivity rate despite over 11 lakh tests having been done in the last 24 hours.

Recovered cases

As many as 74,895 patients recovered from Covid-19 in the last 24 hours. With this, the total number of recoveries has touched 33,98,844 taking the recovery rate to 77.77 per cent. The total number of recoveries on a weekly basis has increased to 4,84,068 in the first week of September from 1,53,118 during the third week of July.

At 43,74,314 cases, India is just about 20 lakh cases behind US’s Covid tally of 65,14,376. However, the US has conducted 2,67,548 tests per million population against India’s 37,470.

High burden states

Andhra Pradesh has reported 10,601 cases and 73 deaths in the last 24 hours. The state has a total of 5,17,094 cases, of which less than a lakh are active.

Tamil Nadu’s case fatality rate is 1.69 per cent and it has recorded 8,012 deaths among its 4,74,940 total cases of Covid-19. The doubling time of the state is is 55.5 days.

Karnataka‘s doubling time is 31 days against a national average of 33 days. It has reported 4,12,190 cases so far, of which 7,866 cases and 146 deaths were reported in the last 24 hours.

Uttar Pradesh has so far reported 2,78,473 cases of which 6,622 were reported in the last 24 hours from the 1.40 lakh tests conducted. The doubling time is 30 days and the case fatality rate is 1.45.

Of the 9.43,772 cases in Maharashtra — 20,131 were reported in the last 24 hours. The state has also seen the most number of deaths in the country — 27,770. Of these, 385 occurred in the last 24 hours.

Uttar Pradesh continues to test the most among the highest burden states while Maharashtra’s positivity rate is through the roof. It was 20 per cent for tests done in the last 24 hours.
