Active case count falls to 2-month low at 7,40,090, but daily deaths spike to over 700

New Delhi: India’s total active Covid case count continues to decline, with the number falling to the lowest the country has seen since 27 August.

While the tests positivity rate also declined to 4.9 per cent, the number of deaths reported saw a spike to 717 Wednesday.

The number of total active cases continues to decline, as it has for over a month now, taking the count to 7,40,090.

In the past 24 hours, the number of deaths increased for the second consecutive day to 717. This comes just two days after India reported 579 Covid deaths in 24 hours — the lowest since 18 July.

India’s total Covid-19 fatalities are now 1,15,914.

Punjab continues with the highest case fatality rate in the country at 3.14.

Maharashtra and Gujarat have constantly been reporting high CFR. While Maharashtra’s CFR remains at about 2.64, Gujarat’s CFR has decreased to 2.26.

Kerala — the state with the third-highest burden of active cases — has a very low CFR of 0.34. The overall CFR for India has further decreased to about 1.51.

As many as 10,83,608 tests have been conducted in the country by 1,121 government laboratories and 855 private laboratories in the last 24 hours. The number of tests has increased compared to yesterday.

The total number of tests conducted in the country since the beginning of the pandemic is 9,72,00,379.

Positivity rate

The test positivity rate rose slightly to 4.9 per cent after registering a four-month drop to 4.5 per cent yesterday. The overall TPR, calculated since the beginning of the pandemic, fell to 7.8 per cent from 7.9 per cent.

As many as 61,775 Covid-19 patients recovered in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of coronavirus recoveries in India to 67,95,103.

India’s recovery rate now stands at 88.81 per cent, a slight increase from 88.63 per cent yesterday.

About 54,044 people tested positive for Covid-19 in the last 24 hours. This has brought the total number of confirmed cases in India to 76,51,107 — the second-highest in the world.

High-burden states

Maharashtra reported 8,151 new cases of Covid-19 and 213 deaths in the last 24 hours. The state has the highest burden of active cases — 1,74,755 — in India, even though the number has been declining over the last few weeks. This brings the total number of confirmed cases in the state to 16,09,516.

Maharashtra also has the highest death toll in the country. As many as 42,453 people have died in the state from the infection.

In Karnataka, a total of 7,76,901 people have tested positive for the virus over the course of the pandemic. Of these, 1,03,964 are active cases and a total of 10,608 people have died in the state.

In the last 24 hours, 6,297 new cases and 66 deaths have been reported from the state.

In the last 24 hours, Tamil Nadu saw 3,094 fresh cases of Covid-19 and 50 deaths. In total, the state has registered 6,94,030 confirmed coronavirus patients so far. Of these, 36,734 are active cases, while 10,741 people have succumbed to the infection.

Andhra Pradesh has reported 7,89,553 cases of Covid-19 infections so far. The active cases in the state stand at 33,396. In the last 24 hours, 28 people have lost their lives to Covid-19, while 3,053 people have tested positive for the disease.

The state’s death toll stands at 6,481.

In Uttar Pradesh, 29 people died from Covid-19 in the last 24 hours, taking the state’s death toll to 6,714. So far, 4,59,154 Covid cases have been reported from the state and of these, 30,416 are active cases. As many as 2,289 people were reported to have tested positive for the disease in the last 24 hours.

In the last 24 hours, Maharashtra’s test positivity rate increased to 10.7 per cent from 8.6 per cent. A TPR of above 10 per cent indicates that the state is not conducting enough tests.

Uttar Pradesh continues to have the lowest TPR among the high-burden states, at 1.5 per cent.
