Daily Covid cases touch 54% of last peak, daily deaths nearly one-third since September

New Delhi: In India, daily cases of Covid-19 have now touched 54 per cent of last year’s peak in September, with 53,480 cases recorded in the last 24 hours.

However, daily deaths are still at about 30 per cent of the highest mortality recorded in a single day, indicating that India has reduced its Covid mortalities compared to the previous surges.

Over the last 24 hours, 53,480 people tested positive for Covid-19 across the country. This is a little over half of the highest single day cases reported in India.

Daily cases in India peaked on 16 September last year, with 97,894 people testing positive for the virus in a single day.

Number of deaths

India reported 354 Covid-19 deaths across the country in the last 24 hours. This is about a third of the maximum number of deaths that India reported in a single day — 1,221 on 18 September.

For a comparative analysis: On 29 July 2020, when daily cases were similar to today (52,479), the number of deaths reported were 775 — more than two times the fatalities reported in the past day.

Active cases in India increased to 5,52,566 in the past 24 hours. Active cases now account for nearly 4.55 per cent of the total cases in India. Maharashtra continues to have the highest share of active cases in the country.

Mortality rate

The overall fatality rate for India has now dropped to 1.34. Punjab’s case fatality is 2.87, which is still the highest in the country. Maharashtra’s CFR reduced to 1.96 while that of Sikkim is 2.16, making it the state with the second-highest mortality rate in the country.

The rapid drop in CFR can be attributed to the increase in the percentage of active cases across India.

Daily vaccinations

In the past 24 hours, 19,40,999 doses of vaccines were administered. So far, 6,30,54,353 vaccine doses have been given in India.

As many as 90,65,318 people have received both doses of the vaccine in India so far.

In the last 24 hours, Covid-19 tests increased to 10,22,915 across 1,227 government laboratories and 1,206 private laboratories. Over 24.3 crore tests have been carried out in the country since the beginning of the pandemic.

Positivity rate

The test positivity rate fell to 5.2 per cent over the last 24 hours, with the increase in the number of tests conducted. The overall positivity, calculated since the beginning of the pandemic, is 4.9 per cent.

Recovered cases

As many as 41,280 patients have been discharged from hospitals across India in the last 24 hours. This brings the total number of recoveries since the beginning of the pandemic to 1,14,34,301.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, 1,21,49,335 people in India have been infected with Covid-19. The highest number of cases have been reported from Maharashtra, followed by Kerala and Karnataka.

States with highest active cases

Maharashtra has recorded 3,41,887 active cases of Covid-19 so far, with 27,918 new cases in the past 24 hours.

A total of 27,73,436 people from Maharashtra have been infected with Covid-19 since the beginning of the pandemic.

Of these, 54,422 people have died, with 139 deaths reported in the last 24 hours.

Karnataka now has the second-highest burden of active cases in the country. With 2,975 new cases of reported in the last 24 hours, active cases in the state increased to 25,560.

A total of 9,92,779 Covid-19 cases have been reported from the state.

With 21 deaths reported in the last 24 hours, the death toll increased to 12,541.

In Kerala, active Covid-19 cases increased to 24,960. In the last 24 hours, the state reported 2,975 new cases of Covid-19.

This has taken the total number of cases detected from the state to 11,21,931. With 16 deaths reported in the last 24 hours, the state’s death toll increased to 4,606.

In Punjab, active cases reduced to 23,731, with 2,188 new cases of Covid-19 reported in the last 24 hours. This is the first time in several weeks that active cases reduced in the state.

A total of 2,36,790 people in the state have been infected in Punjab. With 64 deaths reported in the last 24 hours, the state’s death toll increased to 6,813.

Chhattisgarh reported 3,108 new Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours. The state currently has 22,057 active cases. This has brought the total number of cases detected in the state to 3,44,624.

The state reported 35 deaths in the last 24 hours, which has taken its death toll to 4,131.
