Daily Covid-19 cases below 17,000, positivity rate dips to lowest since June at 1.6%

New Delhi: For the first time in over six months, India reported just over 16,000 new Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours Tuesday. This brought down the test positivity rate to 1.6 per cent — which is the lowest since June.

Daily deaths also continued to be lower than 300 as active cases declined in most states.

India reported 16,432 new cases of Covid-19 across the country. It was the lowest since 23 June. At the time, the country had just recorded a total of 4,40,000 Covid-19 cases.

Active cases fell to 2,68,581 Tuesday, as the number of recoveries continued to outnumber the new cases. Active cases have not been this low since July.

India reported 252 deaths in the last 24 hours. This is the first time since June that daily deaths have fallen below 300.

The total coronavirus death toll in India, since the beginning of the pandemic, now stands at 1,48,153.

Punjab’s case fatality rate (CFR) remained at 3.20 — the highest in the country. Meanwhile, Maharashtra — the state with the highest number of Covid-19 deaths — has the second highest CFR of 2.56.

Sikkim’s fatality rate reduced further to 2.13. India’s overall case fatality rate is now at 1.45.

In the last 24 hours, 9,83,695 Covid-19 tests were conducted across 1,200 government laboratories and 1,085 private laboratories.

A total of 16,88,18,054 tests have been carried out in India since the beginning of the pandemic.

The test positivity rate fell to 1.6 per cent Tuesday, the lowest since June. Overall test positivity, calculated since the beginning of the pandemic, stood at 6.0 per cent.

As many as 24,900 Covid-19 patients were discharged from across the country. Since the beginning of the pandemic, 98,07,569 people have recovered from the infection.

As many as 1,02,24,303 cases of Covid-19 have been reported in India since the beginning of the pandemic. The largest number of cases so far have been reported from Maharashtra, followed by Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.

States with the highest active cases

Kerala, which has the highest number of active cases in India, saw the active case load reduce to 64,205.

As many as 3,047 new cases were reported in the state in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of cases reported from the state to 7,43,563.

The state reported 14 deaths in the last 24 hours, bringing the coronavirus death toll to 2,990.

In Maharashtra, 2,498 people tested positive for Covid-19 in the last 24 hours, which brought the total number of cases in the state so far to 19,22,048. Active cases in the state reduced to 58,294 Tuesday.

The state continued to report the highest number of deaths in the country every day, although the number of deaths in the last 24 hours reduced to 50. This brought Maharashtra’s total Covid-19 toll to 49,305.

Uttar Pradesh has 14,710 active cases as of Tuesday, with 940 new Covid-19 cases reported in the last 24 hours.

This brought the total case count in the state since the beginning of the pandemic to 5,82,920. As many as 8,322 people have died due to Covid, with 16 deaths in the last 24 hours.

West Bengal’s active cases count dropped to 13,161, with 1,028 new cases in the state and 27 Covid-19 deaths reported in the last 24 hours.

As many as 9,625 people have lost their lives to Covid-19 in the state. A total of 5,48,471 cases have been reported from the state since the beginning of the pandemic.

Chhattisgarh reported 1,188 new cases of Covid-19 in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of cases detected from the state so far to 2,76,337. Active cases in the state fell to 12,962.

Meanwhile, the Covid-19 death toll in the state rose to 3,319, with 26 deaths reported in the last 24 hours.
