New Delhi: India’s Covid-19 curve has entered a second wave, with over 40,000 new cases reported in the last 24 hours. The country’s death toll has also crossed 1.6 lakh.

Several key states have been reporting a resurgence in cases and in Maharashtra, the cases in the second wave have outnumbered the first wave.

Maharashtra’s daily cases have already outnumbered the state’s last peak. In September last year, Maharashtra had peaked at nearly 25,000 new cases. In this wave, the state has already reported over 30,000 cases in a single day.

Delhi has already seen three waves, each of which was higher than the previous one. In November last year, the capital was reporting over 8,500 cases each day. Now, daily cases seem to be on the rise once again.

If this trend of second wave being higher than the first repeats in Karnataka, the consequences could be worrying for the country. In October, the daily cases in the state touched nearly 11,000.

Punjab has also failed to arrest its second wave, with daily cases now being recorded at a rate similar to what was witnessed in the first wave — nearly 2,500 cases every day.

However, this can be prevented. Kerala’s second wave, for example, did not outdo its previous surge in cases.
