Average vaccinations declined during ‘Tika Utsav’, India records over 2,00,000 new Covid cases

New Delhi: In the past 24 hours, India reported a record 2,00,739 cases for the first time since the pandemic began in the country. However, while infections rise unabated, the five-day rolling average of vaccinations reveals that the number of Covid shots being given is on a decline.

As seen in the graph, the average number of shots every day declined during the ‘Tika Utsav’ — a four-day special vaccination drive from 11 to 14 April — launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi Sunday.

Active cases

Active cases in India increased to 14,71,877 as of Thursday. This is the highest proportion of active cases in the country since the beginning of the pandemic.

In the last 24 hours, 2,00,739 people tested positive for Covid-19 across the country. More than 60 per cent of these new cases were reported in Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Chhattisgarh and Karnataka. These five states are currently reporting the highest number of cases.

The number of Covid deaths went up to 1,038 in the last 24 hours. This has brought the country’s death toll to 1,73,123.

Punjab’s case fatality rate reduced further to 2.71 but is still the highest in the country. Sikkim’s CFR is now 2.10. In West Bengal, which has the third-highest CFR in the country, the rate is 1.65.

The overall CFR for India has reduced to 1.23 per cent. The rapid drop in fatality rate can be attributed to the rise in active cases.

The number of vaccine doses delivered across the country in the last 24 hours increased to 33,13,848. So far, 11,44,93,238 vaccine doses have been administered in India.

As many as 1,43,14,039 people have received both doses of the vaccine in India so far.

In the last 24 hours, 13,84,549 Covid-19 tests were carried out across 1,230 government and 1,223 private laboratories. Over 26.2 crore tests have been carried out in the country since the beginning of the pandemic.

Positivity rate

The test positivity has increased to over 14 per cent, with the rise in number of positive cases. A positivity rate above 10 per cent indicates testing is insufficient and needs to be ramped up significantly.

Recovered cases

In the last 24 hours, 93,528 patients have been discharged from hospitals across India. This has brought the total number of recoveries to 1,24,29,564.

A total of 1,40,74,564 people have been infected with Covid-19 so far. The highest number of cases have been reported from Maharashtra, followed by Kerala and Karnataka.

States with highest active cases

Active cases in Maharashtra increased to 6,13,635 Thursday, with 58,952 new cases in the last 24 hours.

A total of 35,78,160 people have been infected with Covid-19 in the state. Of these, 58,804 people have died, with 283 deaths reported in the last 24 hours.

Chhattisgarh reported 14,250 new cases in the last 24 hours. This has taken the total number of active cases in the state to 1,18,636.

A total of 4,86,244 cases have been detected in the state and of these, 5,307 have succumbed to the virus. In the last 24 hours, 120 deaths were reported.

Uttar Pradesh reported 20,439 new cases of Covid-19 in the last 24 hours, which has taken the total number of active cases to 1,11,835. A total of 7,44,021 people have contracted the virus in the state since the beginning of the pandemic.

The state’s death toll increased to 9,376, with 67 deaths in the last 24 hours.

Active cases in Karnataka increased to 85,499, with 11,265 new cases in the last 24 hours.

A total of 10,94,912 Covid cases have been reported from the state so far. With 38 deaths in the last 24 hours, the death toll increased to 13,046.

In Kerala, active cases increased to 58,564, with 8,778 new cases in the last 24 hours.

This has taken the total number of cases recorded in the state to 11,89,175. With 22 deaths reported in the last 24 hours, the state’s death toll increased to 4,836.

  1. This is great data and the graphics are very helpful in understanding. Thanks for sticking with indian numbering system ( lakhs, crores ) as this is much easier to understand and interpret as compared to millions etc.
