New Delhi: After expanding into ports, power, logistics and infrastructure, the Adani Group is now entering the healthcare sector with a proposed 2,000-bed hospital and medical education campus to be developed in Kolkata at an estimated cost of Rs 4,000-crore.

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari Thursday laid the foundation stone for the Adani Arogya Mandir at the Bengal Silicon Valley Tech Hub in New Town, Kolkata.

Beyond healthcare, Adani Group chairman Gautam Adani also announced that the group expects to invest more than Rs 1 lakh crore in West Bengal by 2035 across sectors including ports, logistics, power generation, power transmission and distribution, roads, bridges, green cement, and hyperscale data centres.

This would be the first big investment announcement in West Bengal after the first BJP government in the state took charge in May under the leadership of Suvendu Adhikari.

In an interview to ThePrint, state BJP chief and Rajya Sabha MP Samik Bhattacharya had said that the Bengal government has reached out to several business houses including the Birlas and Tatas for investments.

Industrialisation in the eastern state had nosedived post the 2008 land agitation that drove away the Tata Nano project from Singur in Hooghly to Gujarat. The agitation, with Trinamool leader Mamata Banerjee as its face, ended with the end of three decades of CPI(M) rule.

Addressing the gathering in Kolkata Thursday, Gautam Adani said that West Bengal is the natural maritime and logistics bridge connecting India’s vast industrial heartland and the Northeast with the Bay of Bengal. “This gives Bengal a structural advantage few regions can match and the potential to become not just a gateway, but also one of Asia’s greatest integrated industrial and economic platforms. And when this platform connects and expands, something powerful happens in and around Bengal.”

He went on to talk about how ports strengthen logistics, and logistics attracts industries. “Industries drive manufacturing. Manufacturing needs energy. Energy enables digital infrastructure, and digital infrastructure brings in the industries of the future. And most importantly, jobs multiply.”

It is with this conviction, Adani added, that the conglomerate expects to invest in West Bengal over Rs 1 lakh crore by 2035.

He said that the Adani Group wanted West Bengal to become its “second Karmabhumi in the East,” referring to Mundra in Gujarat as the group’s first Karmabhumi in the West.

However, he said that progress cannot be measured only in kilometres of roads, megawatts of power or rupees invested. “A society must also care for its people and protect the culture, memories and institutions that give it identity.”

What will Adani Arogya Mandir have

The Adani Arogya Mandir is being proposed as a world-class, not-for-profit medical institution with 2,000 beds.

Of these, a thousand beds will cater to economically weaker sections of society, eligible under state and central health insurance schemes, Adani said at the foundation stone-laying ceremony.

“We will invest over Rs 4,000 crore in this hospital, college and research facility. And this institution is expected to generate over 10,000 jobs across the healthcare ecosystem of the state,” he added.

He said the hospital and medical college, spread across 51.75 acres, would lay the foundation for a skilled healthcare workforce in Bengal and is expected to cater to over 2 lakh inpatients and over 20 lakh outpatients annually, generating about 10,000 jobs across the healthcare ecosystem.

The first phase of the project will focus on cancer care and provide tertiary and specialised treatment, according to a press statement. The campus is also planned as an academic medical centre with a medical college, nursing college, and an institution for allied healthcare and paramedical education.

The proposed medical college will have an annual intake of 150 undergraduate students, more than 100 postgraduate students and over 40 super-speciality students, the Adani Group said.

The project will also have a research ecosystem covering genomics, precision medicine, biomedical informatics, artificial intelligence, clinical trials, and molecular and applied biomedical sciences.

The Adani Foundation has engaged Mayo Clinic Global Consulting in the US and Singapore’s SingHealth for expertise in clinical care, academic medicine, digital health, quality, workforce development and innovation.

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
