New Delhi: Pakistan President Arif Alvi is all praise for his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping, and has even called him a “great leader”. The Pakistani President, while referring to Xi, quoteed lines from the latter’s book —Governance of China.

“It is the people’s interest that is important in all decision making,” the Pakistan President says, reading lines from Xi’s book, in an interview clip that has been shared by the Chinese State media Xinuha.

“He makes a very good statement… and I have marked it actually,” Alvi said in the interview, as he picked up Xi’s book and opened the bookmarked page.

“He says that never fail the people, he says that running a huge country puts a huge responsibility on the leadership, very important… that’s what I feel personally,” the Pakistani President said.

“Actually for great leaders, self-interest is relevant,” Alvi said, referring to the Chinese President as a “great leader”, adding, “it’s the people’s interest that is most important in all decision making, and of course implementation, and the vision, the goal & strategy.. in everything the people take priority”.

Twitter was quick to react. A user commented on the video, calling Pakistan a “client state”. Another one said, “President of Pakistan praises Xi Jinping, CPEC, Debt trap has forced Pakistan to submit its sovereignty and fate in the hands of CCP”.

Xi’s book is a three-volume collection of his speeches, conversations, instructions and letters, and contains photos of the Chinese leader. The last volume was published in June 2020, and consists his “92 spoken and written works from October 18, 2017 to January 13, 2020, along with 41 photographs”. The second volume of the book has 29 photos of the Chinese President with compilation of 99 of his speeches, instructions and letters between 18 August and 28 September 2017, divided in 19 sections.

The second volume of the book includes practices of the Chinese Communist Party’s central committee and its role in “uniting the Chinese people to uphold and develop socialism with Chinese characteristics in a new era”.

The first volume contains excerpts and summaries of 79 of Xi’s speeches, interviews and talks, spread across 18 chapters. It also includes 45 of Xi’s photos, along with inputs on China’s history, society and culture.
