New Delhi: For weeks, US First Lady Melania Trump has remained out of public view, missing several high-profile events and raising speculation about her absence.

According to NBC News, her last public appearance was on July 19, a month ago. She was seen with her husband, President Donald Trump, at the FIFA World Cup final at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium that day.

Since then, she has skipped several high-profile events, such as Senator Lindsey Graham’s funeral on July 28 and the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on July 24.

According to a Daily Beast analysis, Melania Trump had appeared publicly on 38 days this year. A Newsweek review of photographs found that she had attended 34 public events so far in 2026.

Fewer public appearances than Trump’s first term

Compared with Trump’s first term, Melania Trump has participated in roughly half as many public events. A senior adviser told The Independent that the First Lady prioritises results over appearances.

Her absence has also drawn attention from television personalities like TV host Jimmy Fallon. He commented on her absence during an episode of The Tonight Show.

In Melania Trump’s absence, Trump aide Natalie Harp has frequently accompanied the president. The 35-year-old Harp is among a small group of aides who joined Trump aboard a military aircraft departing to Turkey in July.

Melania’s team responds

However, Melania Trump’s team has pushed back against claims surrounding her “disappearance”. They issued a clarification that she has been working behind the scenes on an initiative involving families affected by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

“There is nothing more powerful than reuniting a mother with her child after an extended period of time.  My representative and I are focused on helping facilitate the next reunification of individuals who have been separated from their loved ones because of the war between Ukraine and Russia,” asserted First Lady Melania Trump.

The team said that, so far, Melania Trump’s efforts have facilitated the reunification of 34 children and families since she penned a “Peace Letter” to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
