New Delhi: There’s a big campaign around Apple’s first foldable iPhone. And it comes from rival Samsung, which has a longstanding presence in the category.

Samsung’s US handle on X released a stream of posts roasting Apple for being late to the game. While Apple did not respond, its supporters put up a spirited defence.

Let us know when you’re done reheating our leftovers,” said one of the posts by Samsung Mobile US on X.

The iPhone Duo was launched on 9 September and is priced at Rs 2,99,900 in India. Samsung, meanwhile, has been selling foldable phones since 2019, including its Galaxy Z Fold and Galaxy Z Flip series, with prices starting at about Rs 90,000 and going up to over Rs 2 lakh.

Samsung’s big roast

Samsung turned keyboard warrior on Thursday with at least eight posts targeting Apple.

“So far, so same” It was another post by Samsung with the hashtag #ItsTimeToSwitch, followed by another post asking, “It’s feeling very familiar. Is this a Sims sequel?”

Samsung even roped language-learning platform Duolingo into the roast, joking that Apple had “copied” it too with the iPhone Duo name. Duolingo played along, responding with a meme captioned: “We infringed upon.”

Samsung has a long history of making fun of Apple. In 2011 it ran a Galaxy S II ad mocking people queueing for iPhones; in 2022 it went directly after Apple for not having a foldable, with “What the Flip, Apple?” posts.

The counter-attack

While the US tech giant has rarely responded to Samsung’s jibes in kind, its fans took on Samsung on its behalf this time.

The Apple Design fan account—which is not affiliated with the company—was particularly vociferous.

“Samsung is having a mental breakdown right now,” said one of its posts. Another added: “Samsung roasting iPhone Duo knowing damn well they’re gonna copy it next year.”

A comment from @Puskarkumar978 said Apple had “perfected” the foldable phone while Samsung was selling an “experimental” product, adding, “Grow up kids.”

“Nah you’re just mad they made a better foldable than you. And you’ve been doing it for 8 years,” added @partyplatter08.

Apple’s first foldable iPhone is the iPhone Duo. It marks the company’s biggest redesign of the iPhone in years. The phone folds down to a 5.4-inch outer display and opens into a 7.6-inch screen, the largest display ever offered on an iPhone. It is powered by Apple’s new A20 Pro chip and features a titanium frame. It has a custom hinge and a dual 48-megapixel camera system.

Apple has also redesigned iOS 27 for the foldable format. It allows users to run apps side-by-side and use the larger screen for multitasking. The phone will be available in India from October 23, with pre-orders beginning October 16.

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
