New Delhi: The label of Bollywood’s ‘flag bearer of nepotism’ has followed Karan Johar everywhere, becoming almost inseparable from his public image. His chat show, Koffee with Karan, has frequently been part of that conversation, with critics accusing him of favouring familiar surnames over outsiders.
Yet, a closer look at the guest lists across the show’s eight seasons presents a more complicated picture. While star kids and members of prominent film families have occupied the couch, they have shared it with celebrities who do not fit the conventional definition of Bollywood nepotism.
The numbers do not settle the debate, but they suggest that the show’s guest list is more diverse than Johar’s reputation might indicate. Based on the compiled guest lists for Seasons 1–8, around 62 of the 123 guests came from non-film backgrounds.
Around 55 guests were what are commonly called ‘nepo babies’, while five were ‘nepo-wives ’, which included Gauri Khan, Maheep Kapoor, Mira Rajput, Bhavana Panday and Suzanne Roshan.
Guests outside the conventional star-kid category have also had a significant presence on the show. Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone, Priyanka Chopra, Anushka Sharma, John Abraham, Katrina Kaif, Vidya Balan, Sushmita Sen, Kangana Ranaut, Kriti Sanon and Sanya Malhotra are among the guests associated with non-film backgrounds.
International guest Richard Gere has also appeared on the couch.

Who returned the most?
The frequency of appearances offers another perspective on the show’s guest list. According to the season-by-season count, 23 guests appeared four or more times across the first eight seasons of Koffee with Karan.
Alia Bhatt, Arjun Kapoor, Deepika Padukone, Priyanka Chopra, Kajol and Sidharth Malhotra have each appeared five times.
Varun Dhawan has also appeared across five seasons, but has made six appearances. In Season 5, he appeared with Arjun Kapoor in Episode 3 and later returned with Alia Bhatt in Episode 15.
Ranveer Singh, meanwhile, has appeared on the show six times, while Shahid Kapoor has made seven appearances. Kareena Kapoor holds the record for the most appearances, having occupied the Koffee couch eight times.

Shah Rukh Khan has also appeared seven times, spread across four seasons.
His first appearance was in the premiere episode of Season 1, when he shared the couch with Kajol. He returned later that season with Gauri Khan, Hrithik Roshan, and Sussanne Roshan, and also featured in a special episode with Amitabh Bachchan.
In Season 2, Shah Rukh appeared alongside Kajol and Rani Mukerji, and later joined Farah Khan and Deepika Padukone for another episode. He made a solo appearance in the ninth episode of Season 3 before returning in Season 5 with Alia Bhatt.
The numbers definitely give a solid counterpoint to Karan, but not a complete defence. Star kids on one side, outsiders on the other – here is how the couch divides.
