“Bana lo video, Akhilesh Yadav ko de dena (make the video, give it to Akhilesh Yadav,” said Singh.

Singh was also pointing to the nameplate on his uniform. The moustache twirl and the subsequent Akhilesh reference have sparked a controversy on social media.

Since the video surfaced, it has drawn varied reactions on social media.

Some users are commenting on the officer’s attitude and conversational style, while others argue that the video should be viewed in its full context.

A verbal altercation with deceased’s family

The CO was reportedly having a conversation with the family members of a deceased truck helper. According to reports, several SP supporters were also involved in the verbal altercation with the police officer.

On the evening of 30 August, truck helper Subhash Kumar (22) was shot dead near Aghar village in the Elao police station area. Kuldeep Kumar, a resident of Jorai village in the Kurra police station area, was driving the truck. Subhash, also from the same village, was present with him.

According to the police, after the truck broke an electrical cable, four to five people chased the truck on motorcycles. The accused stopped the truck in front of a liquor shop in Santosh Nagar and abused them. After this, they started firing. One bullet hit the helper Subhash in the head, causing his death. The second bullet hit Kuldeep in the hand.

Singh was recently promoted from Inspector to Circle Officer (CO).

He is currently posted as the CO (City) in Mainpuri.

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
