New Delhi: Vijay Sethupathi’s Maharaja, released in 2024, is set to be the first Tamil film to get an official Hollywood remake.
Producer Sudhan Sundaram confirmed the news, stating the makers were approached for the remake rights following the film’s strong box-office run in China. A Hollywood agency is currently working to put the project together, with shooting expected to begin next year. But the lead actor hasn’t been locked in yet.

“Following the success of the film in China, where it did very well both at the box office (Rs 91.65 crore) and on OTT, we were approached by a Hollywood agency for the remake rights. They are now trying to set up the project with an A-list star. The film is likely to go on floors by next year,” Sundaram told The Times of India.

‘Maybe McConaughey is one of the stars’
When asked about the McConaughey rumours, the producer stayed tight-lipped.
“Maybe McConaughey is one of the stars they are talking to, but only the agency will be able to confirm,” he added.
Directed by Nithilan Swaminathan, Maharaja follows a barber whose complaint over a missing dustbin lands him at a police station. What appears to be a minor grievance transforms into a far darker story, told through a series of twists, shifting perspectives and a revenge plot.
Sethupathi played the lead role, with Anurag Kashyap portraying the antagonist. Sanchana Namidass, who played Vijay’s daughter, went on to win the National Award for Best Supporting Actress.
