New Delhi: Lionel Messi is stepping into a new world — this time, one filled with giants, magic and animated football. The Argentina star will be donning the hat of an executive producer for the first time with Disney’s upcoming animated sports fantasy series Messi and the Giants.

Disney unveiled the first look at the series at San Diego Comic-Con Málaga on 2 October.

The series will premiere globally on Disney+ next year, although an exact release date has not yet been announced.

Messi and the Giants follows Leo, a 12-year-old boy who finds himself trapped in an alternate world ruled by giants. He must find a way back home while helping restore peace to the kingdoms of Iko, a world divided by conflict.

To complete his mission, Leo takes part in battles inspired by football. He uses powerful spheres and faces legendary giants along the way.

Unlike the other characters in Iko, Leo cannot use the special powers that exist in the world. Instead, he must rely on his football skills, teamwork, and determination to make his way through the challenges.

Argentine actor Milo Burgess-Webb voices Leo. The teaser also features Vamos, Vamos, Vamos, an original song from the series performed by Argentine singer Luck Ra.

With football-inspired battles, giants and supernatural powers, Messi and the Giants aims to bring the sport’s spirit into a fantasy world.

Messi prepares for his final Argentina game

The animated series comes as Messi approaches another significant moment in his football career — what could be his final appearance for Argentina.

Argentina is set to face Benin in their third and final match on October 6 at the Buenos Aires Monumental Stadium.

The match will be Messi’s last one in the national team, where he built the biggest chapter of his career.

As Argentina looks towards a new generation of players, his eventual absence will leave greater space and responsibility for others to step up and take on bigger roles in the next cycle.

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
