Lok Sabha Elections 2024 Results highlights: BJP set to form govt for 3rd term, INDIA bloc crosses 230

As of 9.45 pm, the NDA had been declared a winner on 240 seats, with the BJP accounting for 240. The INDIA bloc secured victory in 233 seats. Of these, the Congress got 99.

The counting of votes cast for Lok Sabha seats across 28 states and 8 UTs in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections is underway, with results now coming in.

The NDA is leading in over 290 seats, with the BJP having been declared a winner in over 40 seats. Meanwhile, the Opposition INDIA bloc is ahead in 230 seats. Of these, the Congress has been declared a winner in 16 seats and the AAP in 1.

HIGHLIGHTS | Lok Sabha elections 2024 results:

9.30 pm: After winning from both the seats he contested from — Wayanad and Rae Bareli — Congress’s Rahul Gandhi said he is “undecided” which seat he will retain.

9.15 pm: Meanwhile, Mamata Banerjee has said, “The Prime Minister has lost credibility. He should resign immediately because he had said that this time they would cross 400 seats. I had said that there is a doubt that the BJP would cross even 200 seats. Now they have to hold the feet of Janata Dal (United) chief Nitish Kumar and Chandrababu Naidu-led TDP.”

9.00 pm: The Congress has been wiped clean in Odisha and Andhra Pradesh, Modi said, while adding that the NDA performed very well in Bihar under Nitish Kumar.

Lok Sabha Election Results 2024: “In Andhra Pradesh, under N Chandrababu Naidu’s leadership, the NDA has performed exceptionally. Under Nitish Kumar’s leadership, the NDA has performed exceptionally in Bihar. Ten years ago, people had voted for a change. In 2013-14, we were among the fragile five (economies) and the country’s youth were worried about their future. In 2019, we received a huge mandate because of our hard work (in the first term) after which NDA’s second term became a guarantee of development and legacy. I am thankful to the mandate that we have received in 2024,” said Modi.

Remembering his mother, he said, “This was my first election after the demise of my mother, but I did not feel her absence because of all the mothers and sisters who voted for me.”

8.45 pm: “It’s for the first time after 1962 that a government has returned for a third consecutive term,” said Modi

8.40 pm: “Today’s victory is the victory of the largest democracy, victory of ‘sabka saath, sabka vikaas’,” said PM Modi to the party workers and supporters gathered at the BJP headquarters.

8.30 pm: “Modiji has always led the party, the nation and its people from the front,” said BJP President J.P. Nadda, addressing party workers and supporters.

“He has scripted a new history. In 2014, a strong government came into being, which was then re-elected in 2019. Despite challenges and hurdles, it worked. And now, Modiji has returned in 2024 as the PM for the third consecutive time,” he said.

Calling Modi a “politician for the poor”, Nadda said, “In 2014, a man born into poverty became the PM. He cared for the poor, women, the underrepresented.”

8.15 pm: Modi arrives at the BJP headquarters in Delhi. To address party workers and supporters.

8.10 pm: Former Union minister and BJP candidate Maneka Gandhi has lost to Rambhual Nishad of the SP in Sultanpur by a margin of 43,174 votes.

8.10 pm: Thanking the people of Odisha for voting for the BJP, Modi wrote in a tweet on X Tuesday that the mandate for the BJP in the state assembly elections is a “resounding victory for good governance”.

“BJP will leave no stone unturned in fulfilling the dreams of people and taking Odisha to new heights of progress,” he said.

The mandate marks the end of over two decades of BJD rule in the state under Naveen Patnaik.

In a separate tweet, he also thanked voters in Andhra Pradesh for voting for the TDP and Jana Sena, both of which are part of the BJP-led NDA.

“Andhra Pradesh has given an exceptional mandate to NDA! I thank the people of the state for their blessings,” he wrote.

The Chandrababu Naidu-led TDP had been dislodged from power by the Jagan Mohan Reddy-led YSRCP in 2019.

7.55 pm: Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge says that the “fight is not over”, and that since none of the major parties has received a full majority, the Congress will hold discussions with its allies as well as “new partners”.

“Till we don’t talk to our alliance partners and the new partners who are going to ally with them, we will talk to them as well and see how we can make a majority. If I talk about all the strategies here, Modiji will become clever,” the Congress president said.

7.45 pm: Actor-turned-politician Hema Malini has won from Uttar Pradesh’s Mathura for the third time, despite a large number of Mathura residents being upset about their “missing MP”.

Speaking to ThePrint, one such resident had said, “She did not do any work in our area, nor did she ever come.” Another, however, said, “We will vote for Modiji and make him win again, whether she works or not.” Read Krishan Murari’s ground report from Mathura.

Hema Malini beat Congress’s Mukesh Dhangar by a margin of 2,93,407.

7.30 pm: In his first public statement since the declaration of results for the Lok Sabha elections, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in a post on X Tuesday that the people “have placed their faith in NDA for a third consecutive time”, which he hailed as a “historical feat in India’s history”.

He added, “I bow to the Janata Janardan for this affection and assure them that we will continue the good work done in the last decade to keep fulfilling the aspirations of people.”

7.10 pm: Congress incumbent MP Shashi Tharoor has won from Kerala’s Thiruvananthapuram for a record fourth term by a margin of 16,077 votes against BJP’s Rajeev Chandrasekhar.

7.00 pm: The BJP has been declared a winner in 9 seats in Uttar Pradesh, and as leading in 23 seats. And while the SP has won in only 5 seats till now, it is leading in 33.

Speaking to the media Tuesday, Rahul Gandhi said, “UP ki janta ne kamaal karke dikha diya (the people of UP have performed a miracle)…They understood the politics of the country, the danger to the Constitution and they safeguarded the Constitution.”

6.45 pm: After winning from Himachal Pradesh’s Hamirpur Lok Sabha constituency by a margin of 1,82,357 votes, BJP leader and Union minister Anurag Thakur said, “This win is of the people…. The BJP won all 4 seats of Himachal Pradesh under PM Modi’s leadership, NDA is going to form the govt…. The next five years we will do more development in Hamirpur. The BJP, along with NDA, has over 300 seats, On the other hand, the INDI alliance has around 230 seats, so there is a huge difference. There won’t be any problem in forming the government.”

6.30 pm: In West Bengal, where the TMC has been declared a winner in 2 of the state’s 42 seats and is leading in 27, Chief Minister and party chief Mamata Banerjee said, “…Even after causing so many atrocities, spending so much money, the arrogance of Modiji and Amit Shah, INDIA has won and Modi has lost. They have even lost in Ayodhya.”

Ayodhya falls under the Faizabad Parliamentary seat where the SP candidate Awadhesh Prasad is in the lead. The BJP’s Lallu Singh is trailing by 54,352 votes.

6.25 pm: The BJP has been declared a winner in 69 seats by the ECI. Union Home Minister Amit Shah has won from Gandhinagar by a margin of 7,44,716 votes and Kangana Ranaut by 74,755 votes in Mandi.

“I am emotional at the moment. I am grateful that the people of Mandi elected the BJP and good governance of PM Modi,” said the actor-politician.

6.20 pm: Union minister and BJP candidate Smriti Irani concedes in Amethi, Congratulates Congress’s Kishori Lal. “I will continue to be in the service of the people of Amethi,” she said Tuesday.

6.15 pm: In Karnataka, Prajwal Revanna loses to Congress’s Shreyas M. Patel in Hassan by a margin of 42,649 votes.

6.05 pm: In his speech, Rahul also talked about Adani Group shares falling on results day. “Have you seen what is happening with Adani stocks today?” he asked. “Public co-relates Adani with Modiji.”

The Adani Group saw about Rs 3.6 lakh crore wiped out from its market value Tuesday, as the stock markets crashed more than 5.7 percent following mid-day poll results showing the BJP set to fall well short of a single-party majority in the Lok Sabha. Read TCA Sharad Raghavan’s report.

6.00 pm: “People fought for the Constitution,” said Congress leader Rahul Gandhi at the press conference Tuesday. “The country has unanimously stated that we don’t want Narendra Modi and Amit Shah involved in the running of this country. I’m proud of the people who have resisted this onslaught on the Constitution of India.”

5.50 pm: Speaking to the media Tuesday, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge said, “It is clear that the public did not give a clear mandate to any one party. This a big blow to PM Narendra Modi and a strategic defeat for the BJP.”

5.45 pm: The ECI has declared 70 seats — BJP wins in 43, Congress in 15, JD(S) in 2, Shiv Sena (UBT) and AAP in 1 each, among others.

5.30 pm: Addressing a press conference at the Congress HQ in New Delhi, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and party leader Rahul Gandhi.

As of 5.30 pm, the ECI has declared 9 seats in favour of the Congress with the party’s candidates leading in another 90 seats.

5.20 pm: PM Narendra Modi retains Varanasi for the third time, winning by a margin of 1,52,513 votes against Congress’s Ajay Rai.

4.40 pm: Shiv Sena (UBT)’s Anil Yeshwant Desai wins from Mumbai South Central in Maharashtra by a margin of 53,384 votes against Shinde Sena’s Rahul Ramesh Shewale.

4.30 pm: In Kerala, the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF), leading in 18 of the 20 seats, is set to sweep the Lok Sabha polls, with the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) leading only in the Alathur constituency and the BJP set to win its first-ever Lok Sabha seat in the state with actor-turned-politician Suresh Gopi leading in the Thrissur constituency.

4.15 pm: The ECI has declared 16 seats — BJP wins in 8, Congress in 4, JD(S) in 2, AAP in 1 and Jitan Ram Manjhi’s Hindustani Awam Morcha (HAM) in 1.

The HAM founder won from Gaya seat in Bihar by a margin of 10,1812 votes against RJD’s Kumar Sarvjeet.

BJP’s Basavaraj Bommai wins from Haveri seat in Karnataka against the Congress’s Anandswamy Gaddadevarmath by 43,513 votes.

4.00 pm: The ECI has declared Sangrur Lok Sabha seat in Punjab in favour of Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer of the AAP. Hayer won the seat by a margin of 1.72 lakh votes over his nearest rival Sukhpal Singh Khaira of the Congress. Also in the fray in Sangrur were former IPS officer and three-time MP Simranjit Singh Mann of the Congress and Arvind Sharma of the BJP.

Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann had won the seat for the AAP in 2019 but his election to the state legislative assembly prompted a bypoll in 2022. This bypoll was won by Simranjit Singh Mann.

3.50 pm: Trends put out by the ECI as of 3.45 pm show the Trinamool Congress (TMC) positioned to improve its 2019 tally of 22 Lok Sabha seats. According to the ECI, the TMC is ahead in 29 seats, followed by the BJP with 12 and the Congress ahead in 1 seat. The BJP had secured 18 and the Congress 2 seats in West Bengal in the previous general election.

3.45 pm: ECI has declared Congress’s Amar Singh as winner from Punjab’s Fatehgarh Sahib constituency. Singh won by 34,202 votes against AAP’s Gurpreet Singh GP.

In Karnataka, JD(S)’s H.D. Kumaraswamy has been declared winner from Mandya. Congress’s Venkataramane Gowda lost by a margin of 2,84,620 votes.

3.15 pm: The ECI has declared the results for Jaipur (Rajasthan), Chitradurga (Karnataka) and Jalandhar (Punjab) Lok Sabha seats. While former Punjab chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi of the Congress has been declared the winner in Jalandhar, the ECI has called Chitradurga and Jaipur in favour of BJP’s Govind Karjol and Manju Sharma, respectively. The margin of victory was 1.75 lakh in Jalandhar, 48,121 in Chitradurga and 3.31 lakh in Jaipur.

3.10 pm: In Rajasthan, trends till 3 pm suggest that the BJP is leading on 14 seats and the INDIA bloc on 8. Compared to the last two Lok Sabha elections — when the BJP swept all 25 seats in 2014, and 24 in 2019 — this performance is underwhelming. Neelam Pandey’s story looks into the factors behind this.

3.00 pm: Senior BJP leader and former Union minister Maneka Gandhi is trailing behind Rambhual Nishad of the SP in Sultanpur by a margin of 26,909 votes. Gandhi, a seven-time Member of Parliament, had contested from Sultanpur for the first time in 2019 after vacating her traditional seat of Pilibhit for son Varun Gandhi, who won the seat in the previous general election but did not find space in the BJP’s list of candidates this time.

2.45 pm: The BJP is leading in all 7 seats in Delhi. The AAP is trailing in 4 — East Delhi, New Delhi, South Delhi and West Delhi. The Congress is trailing in 3 — Chandni Chowk, North East Delhi and North West Delhi.

The Congress and the AAP fought the polls in alliance in the capital.

2.30 pm: Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has congratulated the party’s Lok Sabha candidate from Amethi, K.L. Sharma after trends by ECI put him comfortably ahead of sitting MP and Union minister Smriti Irani from the seat that had remained a Congress bastion since 1967, barring two brief exceptions.

“Brother Kishori, I had no doubt that you would win. I congratulate you and my brothers and sisters in Amethi,” Priyanka wrote on X.

2.15 pm: National Conference leader Omar Abdullah concedes to Engineer Rashid in Jammu and Kashmir’s Baramulla even before the declaration of results. He was trailing behind the Independent candidate by 1,52,771 votes.

2.05 pm: Of the four Lok Sabha seats in Bengaluru, the BJP is comfortably ahead in three with the Congress candidate leading in Bangalore Central. While BJP’s Shobha Karandlaje is ahead of M.V. Rajeev Gowda of the Congress in Bangalore North, Congress’s D.K. Suresh is trailing behind C.N. Manjunath of the BJP in Bangalore Rural. In Bangalore South, BJP’s Tejasvi Surya is ahead of Congress’s Sowmya Reddy.

2.00 pm: Of the 6 Lok Sabha seats in Mumbai, BJP’s Piyush Goyal is leading in Mumbai North and BJP’s Ujwal Nikam in Mumbai North Central, while Shiv Sena (UBT)’s Sanjay Dina Patil is ahead in Mumbai North East and Shiv Sena (UBT)’s Amol Kirtikar in Mumbai North West. Similarly, Shiv Sena (UBT)’s Arvind Sawant and Anil Desai are in the lead in Mumbai South and Mumbai South Central seats, respectively.

In adjoining Kalyan, Shiv Sena’s Shrikant Shinde — Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde’s son — is ahead, while Shiv Sena’s Naresh Gupta is in the lead in Thane.

1.45 pm: ‘Television’s Ram’ Arun Govil, BJP’s candidate from Meerut, is trailing by almost 25,000 votes. SP’s Sunita Verma is in the lead.

The BJP’s decision to field Govil — renowned for his portrayal of Lord Ram in the iconic 1980s television series Ramayan — followed the consecration ritual at Ayodhya’s Ram Mandir held in January and the party had made full use of Govil’s image as Lord Ram. 1.35 pm: Suspended JD(S) MP Prajwal Revanna, currently in police custody in a case of alleged rape, is trailing in Hassan by 39,443 votes. Grandson of former PM H.D. Deve Gowda, Prajwal is a member of one of India’s most influential and prominent political families who enjoy considerable clout in Karnataka and other parts of the country.

After the allegations against Prajwal emerged, Shubhangi Mishra and Sharan Poovanna visited Hassan. Read their ground report on what life was like in the ‘Revanna Republic of fear’.

JD(S) leader H.D. Kumaraswamy Tuesday said, “JD(S) got the results that we had expected, but I am not happy about the results in Hassan.”

1.25 pm: The Aam Aadmi Party is leading in three constituencies in Punjab’s total 13 — Dr Raj Kumar Chabbewal in Hoshiarpur, Malvinder Singh Kang in Anandpur sahib, and Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer in Sangrur. In Delhi, the party is trailing behind the BJP in New Delhi, East Delhi and West Delhi.

1.15 pm: Addressing a press conference Tuesday, Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal requested the ECI to “constantly update the numbers” and counting agents to “not issue certificates of victory till the counting of votes gets complete”.

He reiterated his demand that the counting of postal ballots in each constituency be held before the penultimate round.

1.00 pm: Meanwhile, in Andhra Pradesh assembly elections, trends by the ECI show the Chandrababu Naidu-led TDP in pole position to form the next government in the state. Trends put the TDP ahead in 129 of the state’s 175 seats and its ally Pawan Kalyan-led Jana Sena ahead in 20. The ruling YSRCP of Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy is leading only in 18 seats and the BJP in 7. Read Prasad Nichenametla’s report.

In Odisha, trends by the ECI hint at a close fight with the ruling BJD ahead in 59 of the state’s 147 assembly seats, the BJP in the lead in 72 and the Congress in 13 seats, followed by the CPI(M) in 1 and Independent candidates in 2 seats.

12.50 pm: In Manipur’s two Lok Sabha seats, the Congress is ahead in both. In Meghalaya, the candidate from the Voice of the People Party is ahead in Shillong and the Congress’s Saleng Sangma is in the lead in Tura.

Candidates of the BJP are ahead in the 2 seats each in Tripura and Arunachal Pradesh, while the candidate of the Zoram People’s Movement is leading in the sole Lok Sabha seat in Mizoram and the Congress candidate in the sole Lok Sabha seat in Nagaland. In Sikkim, candidates of the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha are ahead in both seats.

12.45 pm: In Mirzapur, Union minister and Apna Dal (Sonelal) president Anupriya Patel has taken the lead, ahead of Samajwadi Party’s Ramesh Chand Bind, according to ECI. Patel is eyeing her third term in a constituency — made famous by a popular OTT series — that has been known for not giving more than two consecutive terms to its representative since 1952. 12.30 pm: In Madhya Pradesh’s Rewa, Congress candidate Neelam Abhay Mishra has raised concerns over discrepancies in the numbers of five EVMs,

“The number of five EVMs didn’t match with the numbers of FORM 17C,” she alleged, insisting on halting the counting process until the issue is resolved.

12.15 pm: Early trends by the ECI show the J&K National Conference ahead in two of the five seats in Jammu and Kashmir — Anantnag-Rajouri and Srinagar. While Mian Altaf Ahmad of the NC is ahead in Anantnag-Rajouri by 1.62 lakh votes, Syed Ruhullah Mehdi is ahead in Srinagar by 86,000 votes.

In the third remaining seat in the Kashmir Valley, Independent candidate ‘Engineer Rashid’ is ahead in Baramulla.

Union minister Jitendra Singh of the BJP is ahead in Udhampur, while BJP’s Jugal Kishore is ahead in Jammu.

12.00 pm: Early trends by the ECI show the constituents of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance ahead of the ruling Mahayuti in Maharashtra. Among constituents of the MVA, the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray), NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar) and Congress are ahead in 11, 8 and 11 seats, respectively. On the other side, the BJP, Shiv Sena and Ajit Pawar-led NCP are ahead in 11, 5 and 1 seats, respectively. Maharashtra sends 48 MPs to the Lok Sabha.

11.55 am: Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury of the Congress is trailing behind TMC’s Yusuf Pathan in Baharampur in West Bengal, one of the two Lok Sabha seats in the state won by the Congress in 2019. A cricketer turned politician, Pathan is making his electoral debut in Baharampur this general election. According to ECI trends, Pathan is ahead of Chowdhury by 3,387 votes.

11.50 am: Congress’s Kanhaiya Kumar, INDIA bloc candidate for North East Delhi Lok Sabha seat, is trailing by over 40,000 votes. Sitting BJP MP Manoj Tiwari is in the lead.

11.45 am: Early trends by the ECI show the Samajwadi Party’s R.K. Chaudhary ahead in Mohanlalganj, and BJP’s Lallu Singh trailing in Faizabad. Similarly, sitting BJP legislator from Kushi Nagar Vijay Kumar Dubey is in the lead, as is SP’s Mohibbullah in Rampur. In Amethi, early trends show K.L. Sharma of the Congress ahead of Union minister Smriti Irani, while actor Hema Malini is in the lead in Mathura.

11.40 am: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is leading in his sitting seat in Kerala’s Wayanad by 80,203 votes against his opponent, CPI’s Annie Raja.

Rahul, who contested from Wayanad for the first time in 2019, got a thumping majority of 431,770 votes over his nearest rival P.P. Suneer of the CPI.

11.30 am: Chhindwara in Madhya Pradesh, considered the bastion of Kamal Nath, is witnessing a fierce contest with the former chief minister’s son Nakul Nath trailing Bunty Vivek Sahu of the BJP by about 26,000 votes, according to the Election Commission of India.

11.00 am: Uttar Pradesh is witnessing a neck and neck contest between the INDIA bloc and the BJP-led NDA with the former ahead in 40 and the latter in 39 seats, according to early trends by CNN News18.

10.45 am: Jailed Sikh separatist Amritpal Singh, who is contesting as an Independent, is leading in Punjab’s Khadoor Sahib parliamentary constituency. He is currently incarcerated in the Dibrugarh jail in Assam.

Sarabjit Singh Khalsa, contesting as an Independent from Faridkot in Punjab, is in the lead. Sarabjit — son of Beant Singh, one of the two assassins of Indira Gandhi — had made the Bargari desecration case his primary campaign plank. Read Chitleen K Sethi’s story.

10.00 am: BJP’s Smriti Irani is trailing in Amethi. Congress’s Kishori Lal is ahead by 5,337 votes, shows ECI website.

In 2019, the Union minister had defeated senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi from his traditional seat by a margin of 55,120 votes. This time, though, Gandhis are absent in Rae Bareli this time around, but rumblings within BJP are affecting Smriti Irani’s prospects. Read Shikha Salaria’s ground report.

9.50 am: Sensex down by around 2,000 points and Nifty down around 600 points within the first hour of trading on counting day.

8.30 am: Before surrendering at Tihar Sunday, the last day of his interim bail, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had warned INDIA bloc parties to stay vigilant on counting day. He said that it was being suggested that the EVMs were tampered with, and therefore, the parties should get the numbers matched with VVPAT slips. “There is no point crying hoarse later. It has to be done on counting day, so that EVM tampering can be prevented or exposed,” he said.
