New Delhi: Outgoing British High Commissioner to India Dominic Asquith KCMG said Thursday Britain hopes the Indian government would address concerns of the people over the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) keeping in mind its “manifesto commitment”.
“We know the ruling party’s manifesto commitment to ‘Sabka Saath Sabka Vikas Sabka Vishwas’. I trust the government will address the concerns on this issue. But this is for the Indian government to decide,” he said, adding every democracy in the world today is facing protests.
While India has been facing a spate of protests across the country over the amended citizenship law, there have been widespread protests in the United Kingdom as well in front of the Indian High Commission premises there.
The British envoy, who leaves his position as the envoy to India Friday, also said the UK is keen to visit the Kashmir valley as and when the Indian government officially invites the UK.
“The UK would welcome any visit to Srinagar if India permits. But there’s no invite yet,” he said.
The high commissioner also expressed “regret” over some incidents of violent protests on the premises of the Indian mission in London last year after the scrapping of Article 370 on 5 August.
