New Delhi: The Army on Monday shot dead an old hand of the Hizbul Mujahideen, who was trying to infiltrate into Jammu and Kashmir, and was tasked with reviving terror in the Poonch and Rajouri areas, ThePrint has learnt.

The terrorist was identified as Muneer Hussain, who was from Bagyladra, Poonch.

Sources in the Army said Hussain went to Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) in 1993 and returned in 1996, only to go back two years later.

They added that Hussain, along with his bodyguard, was sent back to India with the agenda of reviving the Hizbul Mujahideen outfit in Rajouri and Poonch, which lie south of the Pir Panjal range.

Sources also said Hussain was the mastermind behind several attacks on security forces.

He is said to be a close associate of Maulana Dawood Kashmir of Tehreek-ul-Jihad (TuJ), who in turn, is a close associate of Syed Salauddin, the chief of Hizbul Mujahideen.

As per intelligence inputs, Hussain recently attended a high-level meeting of the Hizbul Mujahideen in Islamabad.

Sources said Pakistan was trying to send “old terror veterans” to Kashmir with the aim to motivate and recruit youth.
