New Delhi: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh Thursday asked the top military leadership to develop a “broader and deeper analysis” of the situation along the northern border and happenings in neighbouring countries that pose a challenge to peace and stability in the region.

His emphasis on the need to have such an understanding among the military leadership came in his address at the two-day Combined Commanders Conference in Lucknow that began Wednesday.

Referring to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine and Israel-Hamas conflicts and the current situation in Bangladesh, Singh exhorted commanders to analyse these episodes, predict the problems the country may face in future, and stay prepared to deal with the “unexpected”, a statement released by the defence ministry said. The minister also stressed on the need for a joint military vision and preparedness for future war challenges.

He also released a joint doctrine for amphibious operations during the meet. This would entail a common operational doctrine for the Army, Navy and the Air Force for carrying out amphibious warfare — especially when it came to defending any island of India.

India is a peace loving nation and the armed forces need to be prepared for war in order to preserve peace, he said, stressing on synergised, swift and proportionate response to provocation.

The minister noted that despite global volatility, India currently enjoyed a rare peace dividend and was “developing peacefully”.

“However, due to the increasing number of challenges, we need to remain alert… We need to focus on our present, keep an eye on the activities happening around us at present, and focus on being future-oriented. For this, we should have a strong and robust national security component. We should have fail-proof deterrence,” he said.
