New Delhi: New rules of engagement are in play along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) and could have helped prevent tensions from spiralling over the weekend when Indian troops won the “race for the passes” on the southern bank of Pangong Tso, ThePrint has learnt.

Sources in the defence and security establishment said when the movement of Chinese soldiers was witnessed at around Saturday midnight along with their armoured personnel carriers, specialised elements of the Indian Army carried out “tactical signalling” to dissuade the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) from coming closer.

The signalling worked and the Chinese Army did not move forward even though they had brought in additional troops after warnings were first issued, the sources said.

“The Chinese realised that India meant serious business and would defend its territory strongly,” a source said.

India has changed the rules of engagement at the LAC after the deadly clash on 15 June in Galwan, which led to the death of 20 Indian soldiers and undeclared casualties on the Chinese side too.

This came after China used crude weapons like clubs and sticks with nails on them to attack the Indian soldiers who had gone to talk and check on China’s promise to dismantle an observation post set up inside the Indian side near Patrol Point 14.

The new rules

According to the new rules, commanders on the ground will have the full freedom to put in use any instrument under their command for tactical operations as deemed fit.

Previously, not all soldiers on the ground carried loaded firearms while on patrol, sources had said earlier. The practice of not opening fire draws its inspiration from the 1996 agreement between India and China, which says “neither side shall open fire or conduct blast operations within 2 km of the Line of Actual Control”.

Asked about specific developments that took place over the weekend, an Army source said, “We dissuaded them from coming closer to our precautionary deployment positions. The details of tactical operations cannot be shared with the media”.

As reported by ThePrint, specialised elements of the Army have dominated the southern bank of the Pangong Tso in eastern Ladakh and are now in control of Reqin Pass and Spanggur Gap in the hills under the Chushul sector.

In a change of tactics, the Army has redeployed troops over the last few days along the entire LAC, especially in Eastern Ladakh.

Sources have underlined that these redeployment is defensive in nature and to pre-empt more aggressive behaviour by the Chinese and to prevent land grabbing attempts.

  1. Don’t show too much too others , it is the best defences, shock the competitor time of face to face it is best attacks , and advertisement will show all your plan and equipment to your competitors, take fast action when war starts , too much discussion and advertising on social media and tv channel and demonstrate of wappon will leads well prepared for competitor .

  2. Nice to know and thank and adore our protectors for their intelligent and powerful actions. It is not wise to put too much English and give clues to the enemy. In your desire to excel.in description you may be revealing too much. Beware.

  3. ‘No self-respecting nation will tolerate China’s action. The present generation in China and in India do not know the help rendered by India to the Chinese army during their fight against Japan in the year 1910 and  1938. India’s is very angry because of the time chosen by them and violated the 1996 agreement. I do not think any Indian who has born and brought up here and not following Marxist and Abrahamic ideology can tolerate the Chines action. I have not heard any country attacking a country busy with controlling  Coronavirus epidemic. But Egypt had attacked  Isreal, on Israeli positions, on Yom Kippur, a widely observed day of rest, fasting, and prayer in Judaism in the year 1973. But Isreal not only defeated the  Arabs but also surrendered unconditionally to Isreal. The same case is going to happen to Chinese. India has put the Chinese in a Chakravyuh.  India is fighting to establish Dharma and not for recapturing inhospitable terrain lost to Chinese in the 1962 war. India has not violated the 1996 agreement. India has not used any firearms in the BufferZone. The Sonia and her family committed the most unacceptable act in the year 2008. Fool Rahul signed a secret MoU with the Chinese Communist Party in the year 2008 knowing that China is India’s number one enemy. It is a treacherous act against the nation.  The Sonia and her family committed the most unacceptable act in the year 2008. ‘

  4. Hahhahahahhah….. India as usual raised the level one step…. I am always surprised by Indians machos, who claim themselves as vegetarian, and yet have so much hate filled anger…. But be cautious next time Chinese too would be carrying live rounds in their rifles..

    • People live in imaginery world with wishful thinking bcz of hidden compulsions. They dont dare to think realistically. Certain people never accept concept of state. When a country fight a war or defend their borders they can simply understand the rational or sentiments. Prisoners of negativity never suporesses their true inclinations. Chinese kill uighurs and tibetans too.

  5. All this sounds like brave Hindu talk, a few months after a beating.

The Hindu chowkidar is comprehensively incompetent but most Hindus cling to him, because they think there is no one better.

    • We should remember that “Offence is the best Defence “. Our Rajas and Maharajas forgot this. It was so during Alexander’s time or again at Muslim invaders time. Even the indianised Muslim rulers waited for the invaders to attack, in defend on our territory , even after receiving the inputs of coming invaders. They never attacked enemy on his territory. Now, the best way to defend is to strike the enemy before it attack us.

  6. Mr. Rahul Gandhi will surely ask for proof of tactical signalling.
The Indian Army must back up its claims with solid proof in order to answer the likes of Mr. Gandhi.
