BJP’s uncontested Surat win is curious to say the least. Purported discrepancies in signatures of all of Congress candidate’s proposers, his relatives, his ‘disappearance’ and withdrawal of other candidates lead to disturbing conclusions, though we’ve to wait for clarity. Such a mandate without votes does no credit to Indian democracy.

US State Department statement over “serious human rights issues” in Manipur can draw the usual protestations of victimhood. Hold your horses. India is now a prominent and respected global power, more is expected of it and sometimes even friends will underline failings. Fix the problem. The image will correct itself.

Calcutta High Court order has failed to address the illegality perpetuated by the West Bengal government in the 2016 teachers’ recruitment scam. Instead, its judgment complicates the matter even more by asking thousands of teachers to return their salaries along with interest. This will not bring closure to the case.
