Bangladesh foreign minister’s stinging rebuke to HM Amit Shah for his ‘hunger-driven-infiltration’ comment is embarrassing. Clearly, nobody in South Block had the guts to caution him after his ‘termite’ remark ruffled Dhaka’s feathers. Shah must desist from jeopardising India’s relations with our most important friendly neighbour for BJP’s domestic politics.

With rising Covid numbers, prudence demands that Modi government should swallow its pride and allow import of approved vaccines. Any additional dose at this perilous point will save lives. Who’s to be held accountable for a global vaccine superpower being reduced to a desperate importer, is an issue for later.

Uddhav Thackeray asking the Centre to declare Covid a natural calamity is an empty distraction. NDMA and Epidemics Act are already in place. The time for shock-and-awe proclamations is over. Maharashtra has lagged with testing numbers and follow-up. It should now ask Centre for freedom to import vaccines instead.
