Amit Shah must desist from jeopardising India’s relations with Bangladesh for BJP’s gains

Bangladesh foreign minister’s stinging rebuke to HM Amit Shah for his ‘hunger-driven-infiltration’ comment is embarrassing. Clearly, nobody in South Block had the guts to caution him after his ‘termite’ remark ruffled Dhaka’s feathers. Shah must desist from jeopardising India’s relations with our most important friendly neighbour for BJP’s domestic politics.

Modi govt should swallow pride and import vaccines. We can discuss our vaccine power later

With rising Covid numbers, prudence demands that Modi government should swallow its pride and allow import of approved vaccines. Any additional dose at this perilous point will save lives. Who’s to be held accountable for a global vaccine superpower being reduced to a desperate importer, is an issue for later.

Uddhav Thackeray should ask Centre for freedom to import vaccines, not new labels for Covid

Uddhav Thackeray asking the Centre to declare Covid a natural calamity is an empty distraction. NDMA and Epidemics Act are already in place. The time for shock-and-awe proclamations is over. Maharashtra has lagged with testing numbers and follow-up. It should now ask Centre for freedom to import vaccines instead.

  1. Maharashtra Govt, before it does anythinng else, let it concentrating on governance first instead of corruption. then everything else will fall in place.

  2. Can the print with proof confirm that there is no such infiltration? not possible. so it is better to keep one’s mouth shut.

  3. Amit Shah and every right thinking citizen of this nation believes that the massive illegal immigration from Bangladesh to India over the last 5 decades is a terrible curse for our nation. Not just Mr. Shah, every single Indian should raise their voice against it.
If it ruffles Dhaka, so be it.

  4. Mecca mein baith kar Haj nahin kiya ja sakta. So one cannot really assess how well our state has performed. However, led by Bombay and also other important cities like Poona, the numbers are daunting. The two week lockdown will create more problems than it will solve. A big hit to the economy. The old cycle of migrants leaving, then returning. Bombay contributes so much to the national fisc, all we ask in return is that the ocean breeze keeps riffling through the city.

  5. India is registering 2,00,000 cases a day. 1,000 deaths. Lockdowns are crushing the fragile economic recovery. Inflation is back. One discerns, possibly for the first time, non partisan anger against the government and how it is handling the pandemic. It can not afford to mess up the vaccination drive, our only hope against the coronavirus. 2. Whether India should be importing vaccines or it is possible, through emergency approvals, licensing arrangements to very swiftly scale up domestic production is for the experts to judge. Sputnik V could deliver 850 million doses in a year. Perhaps liberal funding should be made available to SII. The pricing should also be more realistic. One dose of Covishield is worth more than $ 2.

  6. Bangladesh provides India ( potentially ) excellent connectivity to the north east. As a successful developing economy, mutually beneficial opportunities for trade and investment. If its per capita income now exceeds India’s, the asymmetry would be greater in relation to our states that adjoin it. Clearly there are neither push nor pull ( India has long since switched off the afterburners ) factors to fuel large scale illegal immigration. There are memories and there are stereotypes. 2. China is everywhere in South Asia, as India once was in Davos. Bangladesh is smart enough to keep good relations with both Asian giants, is not playing any cards. PM Sheikh Hasina has kept in check elements that are not well disposed towards India. Nothing should be done which makes her task more difficult.
