Serum Institute of India is erring in seeking damages from the volunteer in the Covid vaccine trial complaining of an adverse effect. Drug trials depend on volunteers and they deserve respect. And what vaccine trials need most of all is public trust, especially when moving at such a fast pace.

With farmers protesting, Covid spiking, Modi ministers’ Hyderabad campaign is cynical

Protesting farmers are knocking at Delhi’s gates. Coronavirus is still raging. The economy is in trouble. The Chinese challenge is unrelenting. Yet, key Modi Cabinet ministers are busy campaigning in a mere municipal election in Hyderabad, and that too on a polarising Hindu-Muslim basis. This is cynical, complacent and unwise.

  1. Agreed. But maybe I would ‘trust’ the vaccine less if they had not counter-sued.
While I empathize with the volunteer, I have a few questions:
    1. How is he sure he didn’t get a placebo?
    2. Why only 5 Cr?
    3. Did he not know the risks of volunteering?

I do also feel that all volunteers are taking a very brave step for mankind.
And maybe a compensation amount should be agreed upon before signing people up.

  2. Out of 150 seats, the TRS holds 99, AIMIM 44. My heart tells me, they will win over 120 seats this time, assuming they cannot repeat the earlier sweep. On 4th December, my birthday, we will know for sure. If the challenger does manage to win about 20 seats, that would be an impressive gain over its present figure of 4. However, not enough to give Bhagyanagar its next Mayor. Using heavy artillery for a minor skirmish is each general’s prerogative. It signals seriousness of intent, an insatiable will to power. The same cannot be said about the hard sectarian turn to campaigning in a city of composite culture. When the same template is repeated in Bengal and Tamil Nadu, citizens will know what is being promised.

  3. The instrument one associates with medical science is a scalpel, not a sledgehammer. 2. All over the world, the best minds are at work, trying to create a safe, efficacious vaccine. In much less time than is normally the historical experience. Corners are being cut, not because pharmaceutical firms are looking to earn windfall profits but because millions of lives can be saved. Also the only responsible way to open up economies. 3. Some errors, accidents, mishaps along the way are inevitable. Serum Institute will play an important role in India’s response to the pandemic. It should be weighed down by a sense of responsibility.
